The British newspaper “Daily Telegraph” reported yesterday (Saturday) that tens of thousands of Israelis living abroad have decided to incur the necessary expenses to return to Tel Aviv to participate in the ousting of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the legislative elections scheduled to take place in Israel the day after tomorrow (Tuesday).
Israel does not allow expatriate Israelis to vote by mail. Therefore, they must cross oceans to cast their votes in person. The number of Israelis living outside Israel is estimated to be around 53,000. Many of those interviewed by the British newspaper expressed their belief that Israel has lost its moral compass. They stated that their desire to oust Netanyahu is attributed to the brutal killings in Gaza, the violence perpetrated by Jewish settlers in the West Bank, and the dispute over drafting religious Jews.
Demands are escalating for the formation of an independent commission of inquiry into the security failures that preceded the October 7, 2023 attack, while Netanyahu’s government rejects this option, instead proposing a committee where the ruling coalition appoints half of its members, with the opposition selecting the other half.
This comes at a time when opinion polls show a tightening competition between Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc, which has been in power since late 2022, and the rival camp led by Gadi Eisenkot, who belongs to the center-right faction.
According to the “Agence France-Presse,” estimates do not indicate that either camp is capable of securing a majority of Knesset seats, which signals complex negotiations to form the next ruling coalition.
The elections hold particular importance in determining the shape of the upcoming government, amid disputes over responsibility for the security failures and indications that neither camp may achieve a majority that allows it to form the government alone.
