‏(انتقل الشاعر الكبير محمد العلي إلى رحمة الله، فقدنا هرماً شامخاً عمر ثقافتنا لعقود منذ السبعينيات، شاعراً وناقداً وأباً معنوياً لأجيال من الشعر والوعي والوطنية، بيني وبينه محبة كما بيننا من خصومة، كان وفياً صافياً في محبته، وخصماً شريفاً في مخالفاته، لم تفسد ودنا تخاصماتنا، ولم تمنعنا المحبة من نقد بعضنا البعض.

‏تقاسمت معه مر الثقافة ونقاء التلاقي. وكلما تلاقينا نسينا ما سبق وعمرنا لحظتنا بالمتعة وصدق المعنى، وسمح كل منا لأخيه أن يحبه بقسط، ويخاصمه بقسط، لكنه كان لي يمثل أجمل لحظات التلاقي وجهاً لوجه،

‏وفي المقابل لم يتخلَ أي منا عن رؤيته، سوى التوافق على المحبة.

‏وجعلنا المحبة في منأى عن الاختلاف الفكري..

‏رحمك الرحمن أيها الغالي الشامخ في حضرتك وفي غيبتك).

تلك كانت تغريدتي لحظة سماعي بخبر وفاة محمد العلي، رحمه الله، وهي خلاصة ذهنية تختصر علاقاتنا على مدى أكبر من المدى الذي وعيناه، ذاك أننا اجتمعنا في صفحة ثقافية واحدة في جريدة الجزيرة عام ١٩٦٤، حيث كنت فتياً في الثاني ثانوي ولم أكن أعرف ذلك الاسم الذي جاور نصي، لكن علق الاسم في ذهني؛ لأن ابن عمّي اسمه محمد العلي مع إضافة الغذامي، وطربت لذلك الاسم الذي طل علي وكأنه أحد أفراد العائلة ولم أكن أعرف عمره حينذاك، ثم اكتشفت أن أربع عشرة سنة تفرق بيننا، وبعد عقدين من الزمان تبيّن أن الفارق لم يكن في العمر فحسب، بل إن فارق الرؤى أكبر من فارق السنوات العمرية، فهو ينتمي للنظرية الواقعية وأنا أصبحت أطرح النظرية الألسنية، وبين النظريتين صراعات عالمية شهدتها فرنسا بأشد وأوضح صورها وانتقل ما حدث في فرنسا إلى العالم العربي، وقد وقعت بيني وبين محمود أمين العالم، رحمه الله، مناوشاتٌ حادةٌ، حيث وقف ضد كتابي (الخطيئة والتكفير) بقسوةٍ رددت عليه بمثلها، وأظنني كنت أقسو مع الأستاذ العالم، وفي خفي شعوري كنت أقول للعلي إياك أعني، ولا أزعم ذلك عن وعي إنما قد يكون شعوراً مضمراً أقرأوه الآن كما قد أقرأ نصاً لغيري.

أما العلي فإن تغريدتي المقتبسة هنا تصف خلاصة أمري معه، رحمه الله، وقد توافقنا على شروط اللعبة، وأشير أيضاً إلى أني ومحمود العالم قد وصلنا لحالة توافقٍ نتج عنها صحبة كريمة منا معاً، وظل الخلاف والاختلاف قائمين بحقهما الكامل مع العلي والعالم معاً.

لكن أبرز صيغ تعابير محمد العلي تتجلى بلغة الصمت، ففي لقاءاتنا كان يحرص على حفظ آداب اللقاء، وإذا سمعني انطلق في حديث لا يعجبه لجأ لصمتٍ رهيب يعم وجهه كله وكافة لغته الجسدية، لكنه صمت ينطق بأبلغ الكلمات الاعتراضية والاحتجاجية، وكنت ألحظ الحاضرين معنا يستمعون إليّ وفي الوقت ذاته يسارقون النظر إليه ليتعرفوا على رأيه فيما أقول، وكنت أعرف أنه يخالفني الرأي، لكن أدبه يغلب عليه ويكتفي بأن يستمتع بنظرات الجالسين من حوارييه وكأن نظراتهم تكفيه لكي يطمئن أنهم ما يزالون معه ولم ينشقوا عليه، ومقابل هذا الرقي منه وإيثاره لسلامة الجلسة من التناطح والمصارعة فإني كنت أبادله الحسنة بمثلها إن لم يكن بأحسن منها، وكان يعرف ذلك مني ويقدره، وأعرف من جهتي أن حوارييه لن يتركوا العودة إليه لاحقا للتأكد من ردة فعله، وأرانا قد توافقنا بصمتٍ على هذا العهد. فهو وفي ومخلص لرهاناته النظرية الخاصة والمتأصلة فيه، وأنا صاحب منهجية هي عهدي مع نفسي وضميري، وحدث وأن تلاقى الخصوم لكنهم خصوم اختاروا النبل والخلق الكريم، وهذا ما جعل علاقتنا تجمع بين النار والملح فتضع حدا بمنع الملح من الانفجار، كما تضع بعض الوقود لبقاء شعلة النار، ويبدو أننا معا طربنا لهذه اللعبة وحمدناها لأنفسنا، هذا هو محمد العلي الذي فقدت فيه اليوم صديقاً نارياً وأخاً مائياً فيه هدير الماء وري الماء، وفي الماء ماء كثير لكنه عذبٌ؛ لأننا معا تشاركنا في تحليته مهما اعترته ملوحة تعكره حينا ليتقدم أحدنا ويخلص المياه من أملاحها، وكان ذاك وكان ذاك.

The great poet Muhammad Al-Ali has passed away, and we have lost a towering figure who has shaped our culture for decades since the seventies, a poet, a critic, and a moral father to generations of poetry, consciousness, and nationalism. Between him and me was love as well as rivalry; he was loyal and sincere in his affection, and a noble opponent in his disagreements. Our conflicts did not spoil our friendship, nor did love prevent us from critiquing one another.

I shared with him the bitterness of culture and the purity of meeting. Whenever we met, we forgot the past and enriched our moment with enjoyment and the sincerity of meaning, allowing each of us to love the other in part and to disagree in part. Yet, he represented for me the most beautiful moments of face-to-face encounters.

In return, neither of us abandoned our vision, except for the agreement on love.

We kept love away from intellectual differences.

May God have mercy on you, dear one, towering in your presence and in your absence.

That was my tweet upon hearing the news of Muhammad Al-Ali’s death, may God have mercy on him, and it is a mental summary that encapsulates our relationships over a span greater than what we have perceived. We gathered on a single cultural page in Al-Jazeera newspaper in 1964, when I was a young student in the second year of high school and did not know that name which was next to my text. However, the name stuck in my mind because my cousin’s name is Muhammad Al-Ali with the addition of Al-Ghudami, and I was enchanted by that name which appeared to me as if it were a family member, even though I did not know his age at that time. I later discovered that there were fourteen years between us, and after two decades, it became clear that the difference was not just in age, but that the difference in visions was greater than the difference in years. He belonged to the realist theory while I had begun to propose the linguistic theory, and between the two theories were global conflicts witnessed in France in their most intense and clear forms, and what happened in France transitioned to the Arab world. Sharp skirmishes occurred between me and Mahmoud Amin Al-Alim, may God have mercy on him, as he stood against my book (Sin and Atonement) harshly, to which I responded in kind. I believe I was harsh with Professor Al-Alim, and in my hidden feelings, I was saying to Al-Ali, “You are the one I mean,” and I do not claim this consciously; it may have been a latent feeling that I now read as I might read a text by someone else.

As for Al-Ali, my quoted tweet here describes the essence of my relationship with him, may God have mercy on him. We agreed on the rules of the game, and I also point out that Mahmoud Al-Alim and I reached a state of agreement that resulted in a noble companionship between us, while the disagreement and differences remained fully intact with both Al-Ali and Al-Alim.

However, the most prominent expressions of Muhammad Al-Ali manifest in the language of silence. In our meetings, he was keen to observe the etiquette of the encounter, and if he heard me start talking about something he did not like, he resorted to a terrible silence that enveloped his entire face and all his body language. Yet, this silence spoke the most eloquent words of objection and protest. I noticed that those present with us listened to me while simultaneously stealing glances at him to discern his opinion on what I was saying, and I knew he disagreed with me, but his politeness prevailed, and he was content to enjoy the looks of those sitting with us, as if their gazes were enough to reassure him that they were still with him and had not split from him. In return for his grace and preference for the tranquility of the gathering over conflict and wrestling, I reciprocated his kindness with similar or even greater kindness. He knew this about me and appreciated it, and I knew on my part that his followers would not hesitate to return to him later to confirm his reaction, and it seemed we had silently agreed on this pact. He was loyal and devoted to his own theoretical bets, which were deeply rooted in him, while I had a methodology that was my covenant with myself and my conscience. It happened that rivals met, but they were rivals who chose nobility and good character, and this is what made our relationship a blend of fire and salt, preventing the salt from exploding while providing some fuel to keep the flame alive. It seems that together we enjoyed this game and praised it for ourselves. This is Muhammad Al-Ali, from whom I lost a fiery friend and a watery brother today, in him the roar of water and the irrigation of water. In the water, there is much water, but it is sweet; because together we shared in sweetening it, no matter how salty it sometimes became, one of us would step forward to cleanse the waters of their salts, and so it was, and so it was.
