The former international player Fahd Al-Harifi confirmed in his talk to “Okaz” that Al-Ahli’s heavy loss to Al-Shabab by six goals to one, in the matches of round 12 of the Roshan Saudi Professional League, is due to several reasons, the most important of which is the lack of a substitute for the Senegalese goalkeeper Edward Mendy, in addition to the repeated defensive mistakes that the first football team of Al-Ahli is suffering from.
Al-Harifi explained that Al-Ahli is suffering from defensive mistakes that he described as “catastrophic,” which are repeated in many matches, pointing out that goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Sanbi commits impactful errors that increase the team’s suffering, amid the lack of clear solutions to address these problems.
He questioned the continuation of these mistakes without resolution, saying: “How long will Al-Ahli remain in this situation? And how long will they not find a suitable substitute for their main goalkeeper Edward Mendy?” emphasizing the importance of addressing the defensive flaws and providing alternatives capable of making the required contribution.
In a related context, Al-Harifi touched on the absence of English striker Ivan Toney, who did not participate due to circumstances related to his presence in Britain, questioning how much Al-Ahli is affected offensively by the absence of their striker, and the impact of that on the team’s ability to capitalize on opportunities and secure victories.
Al-Harifi stressed the need to find urgent solutions to the defensive mistakes and goalkeeping issues, especially since their continuation could cost Al-Ahli a lot in their journey through local and continental competitions.
