The running route that a young American woman was accustomed to taking in preparation for the New York Marathon was unlike any before; minutes of training on a coastal path in Brooklyn turned into a nightmare after she was attacked with a knife, suffering two stab wounds to the neck, leading her to fight for her life in a city hospital while the assailant remains at large.
Katie Suarez, 28, is battling for survival after being rushed to NYU Langone-Brooklyn Hospital in critical condition following the assault that occurred on the Shore Parkway Greenway path overlooking the waterfront in the Bath Beach neighborhood, according to Newsweek.
According to information reported by American media, Suarez had just finished her shift at a TD Bank branch before changing her clothes and heading to the running path near Bay 17, where she planned to meet her parents after finishing her workout.
At around 8 PM, her father received a call from her in which she told him she was only half a mile away from the finish line, but the call then dropped, and she stopped responding to his attempts to reach her, prompting him to go look for her himself, where he found her lying on the path with severe injuries, according to ABC7 New York.
Paramedics quickly transported the young woman to the hospital, where her condition was described as critical, while New York Police Chief Investigator Joseph Kenny confirmed to NBC New York that her health status is “extremely serious.”
$10,000 Reward for Information on the Perpetrator
In an effort to locate the assailant, the New York Police Department released a photo of the victim and urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, as the suspect’s identity and motives for the attack remain unknown.
Investigators are facing challenges in obtaining surveillance footage that could help trace the assailant’s path, despite extensive searches that included the use of police dogs, divers, and aerial teams to comb the area.
For its part, the Crime Stoppers organization announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the attacker.
Concerns Over Recurring Attacks
The attack has reignited security concerns among Brooklyn residents, especially as it comes just days after another assault targeting a woman in Central Park on October 24, when a man armed with a knife forced her into a wooded area before fleeing the scene.
In light of the two incidents, calls have intensified for enhanced safety measures in public paths and parks, with New York State Senator Steven Chan advocating for improved lighting and expanded security surveillance.
Chan stated in remarks to CBS New York that there is a need to improve lighting and equip the bike path with surveillance cameras to reduce risks and enhance the safety of those using the area.
