ألقت السلطات في جزر المالديف القبض على وزير الخارجية السابق عبد الله شاهد؛ للاشتباه في تورطه بقضية اعتداء جنسي على قاصر، في واقعة أثارت اهتماماً واسعاً نظراً لمكانته السياسية والدبلوماسية البارزة.
وذكرت وسائل إعلام محلية، نقلاً عن مصادر شرطية، أن قوة أمنية داهمت منزل شاهد في جزيرة هولهومالي قبل توقيفه ونقله إلى مركز للشرطة، ثم إيداعه أحد مراكز الاحتجاز المخصصة لاستكمال إجراءات التحقيق.
ولم تكشف الشرطة تفاصيل إضافية حول ملابسات القضية أو طبيعة الوقائع المنسوبة إليه، مؤكدة فقط أن التحقيقات لا تزال جارية.
وقبل دقائق من توقيفه، نشر شاهد بياناً عبر منصة (إكس) نفى فيه الاتهامات المتداولة بحقه، معتبراً أنها معلومات غير صحيحة، ودعا إلى عدم الانجراف خلف ما وصفه بالشائعات غير المستندة إلى حقائق.
ويُعد شاهد من أبرز الشخصيات السياسية في المالديف، إذ تولى حقيبة الخارجية خلال فترتين منفصلتين بين عامي 2007 و2008، ثم من 2018 إلى 2023، كما شغل منصب رئيس الدورة السادسة والسبعين للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة بين عامي 2021 و2022.
كما سبق له تولي رئاسة البرلمان وقيادة الحزب الديمقراطي المالديفي، ويخوض حالياً منافسة داخل الحزب للفوز بترشيحه للانتخابات الرئاسية المقررة عام 2028.
ويأتي توقيفه في وقت كان يسعى فيه إلى تعزيز حضوره السياسي استعداداً للاستحقاق الرئاسي المقبل، فيما تترقب الأوساط السياسية والقانونية ما ستسفر عنه التحقيقات الجارية بشأن الاتهامات الموجهة إليه.
The authorities in the Maldives have arrested former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid on suspicion of involvement in a case of sexual assault on a minor, an incident that has garnered widespread attention due to his prominent political and diplomatic status.
Local media reported, citing police sources, that a security force raided Shahid’s home in Hulhumale before detaining him and transferring him to a police station, where he was then placed in one of the detention centers designated for completing investigation procedures.
The police did not disclose additional details regarding the circumstances of the case or the nature of the allegations against him, only confirming that investigations are still ongoing.
Minutes before his arrest, Shahid published a statement via the platform (X) denying the circulating accusations against him, considering them to be incorrect information, and called for not being swept away by what he described as unfounded rumors.
Shahid is considered one of the most prominent political figures in the Maldives, having held the position of Foreign Minister during two separate terms between 2007 and 2008, and then from 2018 to 2023. He also served as the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly between 2021 and 2022.
He has previously held the presidency of the parliament and led the Maldivian Democratic Party, and he is currently competing within the party to secure his nomination for the presidential elections scheduled for 2028.
His arrest comes at a time when he was seeking to enhance his political presence in preparation for the upcoming presidential election, while political and legal circles are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigations regarding the accusations against him.
