وقلب البرازيلي فونسيكا المصنف الـ30 عالميا، تأخره بمجموعتين دون رد أمام الصربي ديوكوفيتش، وحقق الفوز في مباراة ماراثونية استمرت 4 ساعات و53 دقيقة، وبواقع نتائج (4 – 6، و4 – 6، و6 – 3، و7 – 5، و7 – 5).
وجاء هذا الخروج المبكر لديوكوفيتش المصنف الأول عالميا سابقا والرابع حاليا، ليؤجل مجددا سعيه، وهو في سن 39 عاما، لتحقيق لقبه الـ 25 القياسي في بطولات الـ «جراند سلام»، وهو إنجاز لا يزال يطارده منذ ثلاث سنوات.
ويفتح خروج ديوكوفيتش، آخر لاعب في المنافسة سبق له التتويج ببطولة كبرى، باب المنافسة على مصراعيه، خصوصا بعد انسحاب الإسباني كارلوس ألكاراز حامل اللقب مرتين، وخروج الإيطالي يانيك سينر المصنّف أول عالميا والمرشح الأبرز للقب من الدور الثاني.
وسيواجه فونسيكا في الدور القادم الفائز في مواجهة النرويجي كاسبر رود والأمريكي تومي بول.
The Serbian player Novak Djokovic has exited the third round of the French Open, one of the four major Grand Slam tournaments in tennis, held at the Roland Garros courts, after losing to Brazilian Joao Fonseca in three sets to two.
Brazilian Fonseca, ranked 30th in the world, came back from two sets down against Djokovic and achieved victory in a marathon match that lasted 4 hours and 53 minutes, with scores of (4 – 6, 4 – 6, 6 – 3, 7 – 5, 7 – 5).
This early exit for Djokovic, a former world number one and currently ranked fourth, further delays his quest, at the age of 39, to secure his record 25th title in Grand Slam tournaments, a feat he has been chasing for three years.
Djokovic’s exit, the last player in the competition who has previously won a major title, opens the competition wide, especially after the withdrawal of Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz, a two-time champion, and the exit of Italian Jannik Sinner, the world number one and the top contender for the title, in the second round.
Fonseca will face the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud and American Tommy Paul in the next round.
