الرحلة التي بدأت برومانسية متهورة من قرية «إيرفالد» النمساوية قبيل بزوغ الفجر بهدف التقاط صور لشروق الشمس من ارتفاع ثلاثة آلاف متر، تحولت إلى كابوس مرعب عند بلوغ نقطة 2500 متر. وهناك، انقضت العاصفة الثلجية بغزارة ليغوص منسوب الثلج حتى الركبتين، ووسط عجز الفتاة واستنفاد قواها الجسدية، اتخذ الشاب قراره الأناني بالفرار وحيداً تاركاً رفيقته تصارع هبوط حرارة البدن القاتل، قبل أن تتمكن من إطلاق استغاثة عاجلة أنقذت حياتها في اللحظات الأخيرة بفضل فريق إنقاذ جبلي شق طريقه وسط ظروف بالغة التعقيد.

The incident did not go unnoticed by the Austrian authorities, as the police opened strict criminal investigations that could lead to prison sentences of up to three months, based on terrifying judicial precedents witnessed in the country’s courts recently, the most notable of which was the conviction of another climber for manslaughter and gross negligence after a similar abandonment that cost his girlfriend’s life, turning amateur trips into a public issue that firmly holds accountable anyone who shirks humanitarian responsibility.
