The Jordanian governorate of Karak held today (Sunday) the funeral of the victims of the armed attack that targeted the St. George’s Church of the Greek Orthodox in the village of Hamoud, amid assurances from the authorities that investigations are ongoing to pursue those responsible and bring them to justice.
The Jordan News Agency (Petra) announced the holding of unified official and popular funeral ceremonies at 1 PM, with the participation of the victims’ families and the people of the governorate. Funeral processions will start from several churches and head to the burial site in the village of Hamoud, where a grave and a memorial have been prepared to commemorate the victims.
According to media reports, the death toll from the attack has risen to 9 dead and 34 injured, after gunmen opened fire during the funeral ceremonies that were taking place around the church last Friday, in an incident that has caused widespread shock in Jordan.
Jordanian authorities have condemned the attack and confirmed that investigations are ongoing to pursue those responsible and bring them to justice, amid calls to uphold national unity and reject violence and extremism.
Jordanian Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan stated during a session he chaired in the Cabinet today (Sunday) that “it is essential to uproot extremist and takfiri thought from its roots,” emphasizing that there is no place for it in Jordanian society.
He affirmed that confronting extremism is not just a security battle, but a battle of awareness and thought, pointing out that state agencies are working to apprehend those involved in the attack that occurred in Karak last Friday, stressing the importance of maintaining community cohesion and confronting sedition and extremism.
