Google and Amazon have expanded their tools for AI developers in a move aimed at facilitating the operation of applications built on the “PyTorch” framework on their own chips, and reducing the need to rewrite code when transitioning between different computing platforms.
Google announced the open-sourcing of the “TorchTPU” tool, which allows developers to run “PyTorch” applications directly on its “TPU” processing units with limited code changes, enabling the use of the same tools employed in training and running models on other platforms.
Running applications without rebuilding them
The new tool allows the use of existing AI applications on Google chips without the need to rebuild the project from scratch or convert it to a different programming environment, which could reduce time and costs for developers.
Amazon also announced the “TorchNeuron” tool, which enables the running of “PyTorch” applications on “Trainium” chips from the AWS service, while maintaining most of the current code and without the need for extensive rewriting of applications.
Competition for AI developers
These steps come amid increasing competition among cloud computing companies to attract AI developers, especially with the dominance of NVIDIA chips and its software environment over a significant portion of model training and operation processes.
Google and Amazon aim to make their chips easier to use for developers accustomed to “PyTorch,” which is one of the most widely used AI development frameworks globally.
Broader options for developers
The new tools provide developers with greater flexibility in choosing the infrastructure and chips on which they want to run their applications, while reducing the programming hurdles that made transitioning between different types of processors more complex.
These moves come at a time when major tech companies are racing to develop chips dedicated to AI and reduce the costs of running large models, coinciding with the growing demand for computing capabilities tailored for generative applications and intelligent agents.
