Preliminary estimates for the results of the Israeli Knesset elections today (Tuesday) suggest the possibility of President Isaac Herzog assigning Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to form the next government, amid indications of a decline in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s camp, without determining the identity of the coalition capable of gaining the parliament’s confidence.
The Israeli Channel 12 reported estimates that the preliminary results allow President Isaac Herzog to assign Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to form the next government, clarifying that the president’s final decision depends on the official election results and the recommendations of the heads of parliamentary blocs.
Channel 12 noted that the preliminary results reveal a strong possibility that Gadi Eisenkot will have the right to form the government, indicating that the results show Likud obtained 24 seats, while the Yashar party secured 22 seats, and Naftali Bennett’s party got 12 seats.
Based on the preliminary estimates, the newspaper Israel Hayom quoted opposition bloc leader Gadi Eisenkot as saying: The initial poll results show a complete lack of confidence in Netanyahu and the government of October 7, adding: If these are the final results, this is a victory for the official Zionist majority in Israel.
He indicated that he would immediately work to implement the will of the Israelis, replace Netanyahu’s government, and establish a Zionist recruitment government as soon as possible.
For his part, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid stated that Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc “suffered a severe defeat,” adding, “The results reflect a complete collapse of Netanyahu’s camp, and the people told them to go home.”
In turn, the leader of the Democratic Party in Israel, Yair Golan, emphasized that “the public has spoken and dismissed Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.”
On the other hand, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority quoted a senior official in Likud as saying: We received the preliminary results positively, contrary to expectations, and we anticipated the other camp achieving a sweeping victory.
It noted that the United Arab List is not sufficient for Eisenkot to form a government coalition and will need the Joint List.
For his part, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated: The celebrations of the Israeli left are premature, adding: The clear thing is that “Likud is the largest party.”
In the same context, Israeli Channel 14, close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that the right-wing camp obtained 60 seats, the left 43, and the Arab parties 17.
A voter opinion poll conducted by Israeli Channel 12 showed that the party led by Eisenkot would receive 22 seats out of 120 in the Knesset, while Netanyahu’s Likud party would secure 24 seats out of 120 in the Knesset.
The polls indicated that there is no clear winner in the Knesset elections, showing that Eisenkot’s camp would lead with 52 seats, Netanyahu’s camp would receive 50, and the Arab parties 18.
