اضطرت طائرة تابعة لشركة الخطوط الجوية الفرنسية «إير فرانس» كانت متجهة من باريس إلى مدينة ديترويت الأمريكية إلى تغيير مسارها والهبوط في مونتريال الكندية، بعد أن منعت السلطات الأمريكية الطائرة من دخول أجوائها بسبب قيود صحية مرتبطة بتفشي فايروس إيبولا.
وقالت هيئة الجمارك وحماية الحدود الأمريكية، إن أحد الركاب على متن الرحلة كان قادماً من جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، وكان ينبغي منعه من الصعود إلى الطائرة المتجهة إلى الولايات المتحدة وفقاً للإجراءات الجديدة الخاصة باحتواء انتشار الفايروس.
وأوضح متحدث باسم الهيئة أن شركة «إير فرانس» سمحت للراكب بالصعود عن طريق الخطأ، مضيفاً أن السلطات الأمريكية اتخذت قراراً فورياً بمنع الطائرة من الهبوط في مطار ديترويت وتحويلها إلى مونتريال في كندا.
ولم تكشف السلطات عن ما إذا كان الراكب قد ظهرت عليه أعراض المرض، كما لم توضح موعد زيارته الأخيرة إلى الكونغو أو جنسيته.
حالة ارتباك على متن الطائرة
وبحسب بيانات تتبع الرحلات الجوية، هبطت الرحلة رقم 378 القادمة من مطار شارل ديغول في باريس بمطار مونتريال ترودو الدولي مساء الأربعاء.
وقالت إحدى الراكبات، وتدعى ديبورا ميستور، إن قائد الطائرة أبلغ المسافرين قبل نحو أربع ساعات من الوصول المقرر إلى ديترويت بأن السلطات الأمريكية رفضت السماح للطائرة بالهبوط، من دون تقديم تفسير واضح في البداية.
وأضافت أن قائد الطائرة عاد لاحقاً ليؤكد عدم وجود أي عطل فني أو مشكلة تقنية، مشيراً إلى أن قرار التحويل جاء حصراً بسبب تعليمات السلطات الأمريكية.
وأثارت الواقعة قلق الركاب بعدما ارتدى أفراد طاقم الطائرة الكمامات الواقية عقب الإعلان عن تغيير المسار، رغم تأكيدات الطاقم بأن الوضع تحت السيطرة.
قيود أمريكية جديدة بسبب إيبولا
وكانت المراكز الأمريكية لمكافحة الأمراض والوقاية منها (CDC) قد أعلنت مطلع الأسبوع فرض قيود على دخول الأشخاص غير الأمريكيين الذين زاروا جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية أو أوغندا أو جنوب السودان خلال الأسابيع الثلاثة الماضية.
كما أعلنت وزارة الأمن الداخلي الأمريكية أن جميع الرحلات المتجهة إلى الولايات المتحدة والتي تقل مسافرين زاروا تلك الدول خلال آخر 21 يوماً ستُلزم بالهبوط في مطار واشنطن دالاس الدولي، حيث تركز السلطات الأمريكية إجراءات الفحص والتدابير الصحية المشددة.
تفشٍ جديد للفايروس
ويأتي ذلك في ظل تفشٍ جديد لفايروس إيبولا في شرق جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، كانت المراكز الأفريقية لمكافحة الأمراض قد أكدت ظهوره في 15 مايو الجاري.
وقال المدير العام لمنظمة الصحة العالمية تيدروس أدهانوم غيبريسوس إن عدد الحالات المشتبه بها تجاوز 600 حالة حتى الآن، بينها 139 وفاة محتملة مرتبطة بالفايروس.
وأشار خبراء الصحة إلى أن التفشي الحالي مرتبط بسلالة بونديبوجيو من فايروس إيبولا، وهي سلالة لا تتوفر لها حتى الآن لقاحات أو علاجات معتمدة بشكل رسمي.
A plane belonging to Air France, which was headed from Paris to Detroit, USA, was forced to change its course and land in Montreal, Canada, after U.S. authorities prevented the aircraft from entering its airspace due to health restrictions related to the outbreak of the Ebola virus.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency stated that one of the passengers on the flight was coming from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and should have been prohibited from boarding the plane heading to the United States according to the new procedures aimed at containing the spread of the virus.
A spokesperson for the agency explained that Air France mistakenly allowed the passenger to board, adding that U.S. authorities made an immediate decision to prevent the plane from landing in Detroit and redirected it to Montreal, Canada.
The authorities did not disclose whether the passenger showed any symptoms of the disease, nor did they clarify the passenger’s last visit to Congo or their nationality.
Confusion on Board the Plane
According to flight tracking data, flight number 378 from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris landed at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport on Wednesday evening.
One of the passengers, named Deborah Meastor, stated that the pilot informed travelers about four hours before the scheduled arrival in Detroit that U.S. authorities had refused to allow the plane to land, without initially providing a clear explanation.
She added that the pilot later returned to confirm that there was no technical malfunction or issue, indicating that the diversion decision was solely due to instructions from U.S. authorities.
The incident raised concerns among passengers after the crew members wore protective masks following the announcement of the course change, despite the crew’s assurances that the situation was under control.
New U.S. Restrictions Due to Ebola
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced earlier this week that restrictions would be imposed on the entry of non-U.S. citizens who had visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan in the past three weeks.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also announced that all flights heading to the United States carrying passengers who visited those countries in the last 21 days would be required to land at Washington Dulles International Airport, where U.S. authorities focus their screening and enhanced health measures.
New Outbreak of the Virus
This comes amid a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, which the African Centers for Disease Control confirmed had emerged on May 15.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the number of suspected cases has exceeded 600 so far, including 139 potential deaths linked to the virus.
Health experts indicated that the current outbreak is associated with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a strain for which there are currently no officially approved vaccines or treatments available.
