The chief Iranian negotiator and Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, revealed that Tehran has provided what he described as a strong and rational response to Washington, considering that the ball is in the United States’ court to avoid war.
In a televised speech on Tuesday, he said: “Countries in the region should know that while the Islamic Republic of Iran is on high alert for battle with its finger on the trigger, it has also provided a strong and rational response to the American side.”
After the threats issued over the weekend, Monday saw a noticeable change in tone between the Iranians and Americans, with Donald Trump’s statement on the eve of the midterm elections suggesting that reaching an agreement with Iran is possible.
Trump wrote on his platform “Truth Social” ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for today, Tuesday: “Oil prices are plummeting (…) because people feel there will be no war with Iran. Iran wants to reach a settlement as soon as possible. It could happen!” Trump reiterated during a recent appearance on Fox News that “They are very eager to reach an agreement.”
Last weekend, Trump stated that he is prepared to deliver a “devastating blow” to Iran, mentioning that he still needs to “deal with” one or two Iranian nuclear sites.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the United States launched an attack on the Iranian island of Qeshm, despite President Donald Trump’s indication of progress in negotiations with Tehran to end the eight-month-long war.
For his part, Vice President JD Vance said: “The President and I feel a degree of optimism about the chances of reaching a settlement (with Iran) through negotiation,” adding: “We have already made some progress, and we will see if we can achieve more.”
For its part, Iran announced that it is engaged in intensive indirect talks with the United States, seeking to end the war in the Middle East and avoid a new escalation, amid vigorous diplomatic efforts that have driven oil prices down. Tehran has expressed a conditional readiness to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz within two days instead of the seven days stipulated in its initial plan.
