West Ham United announced today (Tuesday) the dismissal of their Portuguese coach Nuno Espírito Santo due to the team’s declining results in the English Championship.
The London club stated in a statement on its official website: “West Ham United confirms that the first team manager Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect, along with assistant coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa.”
The statement added: “After a thorough review of the start of the English football league season, the board believes that a change has become necessary at this time to ensure the club’s goals and expectations remain on track.”
*A trio to lead the team temporarily*
The club’s statement clarified that Mark Noble, Steve Potts, and Gerard Brindley will take on the task of preparing the team temporarily before the scheduled match against Cardiff City tomorrow, noting that no further comments will be made until the announcement of a new head coach.
*Two consecutive losses behind Santo’s dismissal*
Nuno Santo took over as West Ham’s coach following Graham Potter’s dismissal in September, and the Portuguese coach retained his position despite the team’s relegation from the Premier League, being tasked with the mission of quickly returning to the top division.
However, two consecutive losses against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion caused the London team to drop to eighth place in the Championship standings, leading the club to decide to end the Portuguese coach’s tenure.
*20 victories in 53 matches*
Nuno Santo achieved 20 victories during 53 matches he led with West Ham, including two significant wins of 6-0 against Wrexham and Lincoln during the current season.
