The Reuters agency continues to waste its professional credibility with laughable treatments, including its coverage of the transfer of its correspondent from working in Saudi Arabia to Dubai, where it gave him a marginal space and detail to touch upon the image of the Kingdom.
An agency of this size is expected to regulate its language according to standards of accuracy and balance, maintaining a professional distance between news reporting and promoting impressions, and avoiding succumbing to exaggerated narratives (driven) by agendas and manipulation.
The publication presented by the agency addressed the personal circumstances surrounding the departure of its main correspondent in Saudi Arabia, Timur Azhari.
Thus, the movement of a journalist became material for discussing the security status of the Kingdom, in a treatment that deserves explicit criticism, far from the immunity provided by the big name.
Journalistic work encompasses the movement of correspondents and the changing of their locations, and the agency’s coverage of Saudi Arabia goes beyond one person and is still ongoing.
Continuous Lies and Repeated Falls
Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman previously confronted the agency with a firm stance during the “OPEC+” conference in Vienna on October 5, 2022, refusing to answer its questions, accusing it of relying on a source he described as fictitious, and denying the accuracy of a report about a Saudi-Russian understanding regarding a price of $100 per barrel of oil. He explained that he dedicated about 25 minutes to clarify the Kingdom’s position to one of its journalists in Dubai.
Similarly, U.S. President Donald Trump attacked its correspondent Jeff Mason, describing him as a “third-rate journalist,” following a question about the transparency of the White House event hall project.
Global standing is a daily responsibility, and credibility erodes whenever excitement prevails and discipline is absent. “Reuters” is required to maintain professionalism commensurate with its level of dissemination; the name does not cover shortcomings, history does not grant immunity to mistakes, and trust is not preserved by inflating margins. The journalism that demands clarity from others must first review its language and choices, respecting the reader with accurate and balanced material, fully bearing its responsibility, without relying on the institution’s fame or its wide influence.
Incidents of Professional Falls Involved with the Agency
Manipulation of Images from the Lebanon War in 2006
It admitted that its photographer altered two images, one to intensify the smoke over Beirut, and the second to increase the number of thermal flares launched by a plane it apologized for, and withdrew its archive of 920 images as a precaution.
Describing Iranian female athletes as “killers” in 2012 — a false headline corrected by the agency
It was amended to describe them as practicing sports. Following the incident, the agency’s press accreditation in Tehran was suspended, and its 11 employees were asked to return their press cards.
News of Russian Missiles in Poland, November 2022 — News withdrawn by the agency
