A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Bonin Islands of Japan.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 492 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
Japan is located at the convergence of four tectonic plates, making it particularly susceptible to seismic activity, and it is also home to 100 active volcanoes.
An earthquake that occurred in 2011, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, accompanied by powerful tsunami waves, resulted in the deaths of more than 15,000 people and caused a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
