The film “Shams Al-Zanaty,” starring artist Mohamed Imam, is facing a severe production crisis following a court ruling sentencing its producer, Raymond Ramses, to three years in prison due to a bounced check.
In Absentia Ruling
The Sheikh Zayed First and Second Misdemeanor Court issued an in absentia ruling sentencing film producer Raymond Ramses to three years in prison, obliging him to bear the criminal expenses, after he was convicted of issuing a bounced bank check.
The legal roots of the case, registered under number 3815 for the year 2026, stem from a financial dispute between producer Raymond Ramses and a person named Saif Al-Din Mohamed. According to the officially documented details, Ramses issued a bank check numbered 56974 for an amount of 661,000 Egyptian pounds, dated June 15, 2025.
When the beneficiary attempted to cash the due amount, they encountered the bank’s refusal to pay due to insufficient funds, which was confirmed by an official banking statement issued in late July 2026.
Consequently, the affected party pursued legal action by filing an official complaint at the Sheikh Zayed Second Police Station, detailing the significant material and moral damage inflicted upon them.
After the Public Prosecution referred the case documents to the court, the latter based its deterrent ruling on the provisions stipulated in the Commercial Law No. 17 of 1999, which categorically criminalizes the issuance of checks without sufficient funds available for withdrawal.
Filming Continues
While the ruling was issued against producer Ramses, artist Mohamed Imam continues to film his scenes in the work, which has a nostalgic tone reminiscent of the original and iconic version presented by his father, “The Leader,” Adel Imam, in 1991.
The dramatic plot of the new version takes place in a timeline that precedes the events of the original film by about 15 years, shedding light on the circumstances and motivations that led to the formation of the “Zanaty” band.
The film is directed by Ahmed Khaled Moussa, renewing the artistic partnership with Mohamed Imam after their previous success in the film “Thief of Baghdad” in 2020.
