The “Austin” storm caused power outages for about 161,000 homes in northwestern France today (Friday), with strong winds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour in some areas, disrupting train and ferry services.
The French electricity network operator “Enedis” announced that the Brittany region was the most affected, with power cut to about 128,000 homes, compared to 19,000 in the Pays de la Loire region, and 14,000 in Normandy.
Winds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour
The “Pointe du Raz” area recorded gusts of wind reaching about 161 kilometers per hour, while several other coastal areas recorded record speeds for October, including Ouessant, Ploumanach, Lannion, and Saint-Nazaire.
Authorities placed 23 departments in the northwest of the country under orange alert due to strong winds, with ongoing concerns about falling trees, damage to power networks, and disruptions to transport.
Disruption of trains and ferries
The storm also caused widespread disruptions in transport, as services for several regional trains in Normandy and Brittany were halted, while some ferries connecting France to England remained docked due to strong winds and high waves.
In the Finistère department, a crisis management center was activated as the winds intensified, while emergency teams carried out dozens of interventions to remove trees and obstacles from roads and secure affected areas.
More than 2000 employees to restore electricity
Enedis stated that more than 2000 employees have been prepared to intervene and restore power as soon as weather conditions improve and allow for safe fieldwork.
