Today, Thursday, Yemeni scholars, preachers, and researchers called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights and humanitarian organizations to assume their responsibilities towards civilians in Taiz, and to take serious and effective steps to end the siege, ensure respect for the rules of international humanitarian law, and work to protect the population from ongoing violations and Houthi shelling.
The participants in a seminar organized by the Communication Program with Yemeni Scholars in the city of Marib today (Thursday) condemned the siege imposed by the Houthi terrorist militia on the city of Taiz, highlighting its humanitarian dimensions and its effects on the population, reviewing the legal, national, and humanitarian responsibilities towards those besieged and the duty to work to lift the siege and end the suffering of civilians.
The seminar, titled “The Siege of Taiz: A Houthi Crime and a Duty to Support,” emphasized the importance of official and popular alignment in confronting Houthi violations, and strengthening the unity of the national position regarding the siege of Taiz, considering its lifting a national and humanitarian responsibility that requires the integration of efforts from state institutions, community forces, scholars, preachers, human rights organizations, and the media, stressing the right of the people of Taiz to protect themselves and defend their rights by legitimate means.
The participants in the seminar discussed three main axes. The first axis addressed the siege from the perspective of Islamic law, the obligation to support and work to end it, and the responsibility of scholars, preachers, and official and community institutions in clarifying the legal ruling on the siege and its effects, raising community awareness about their duties towards the besieged, enhancing solidarity with the people of Taiz, and unifying efforts aimed at lifting the siege and alleviating the suffering of the population by legitimate means.
The second axis reviewed the siege imposed by the militia on Taiz from the perspective of international humanitarian law, highlighting the legal rules governing the protection of civilians during armed conflicts, and the guarantees established by the Geneva Conventions and related rules for the protection of populations and civilian objects, as well as the prohibition of starving civilians and using it as a method of warfare.
The third axis addressed statistics on Houthi violations against the people of Taiz, presenting the suffering of the population since 2015 to the present, due to the restrictions imposed on roads, supplies, civilian movement, and access to humanitarian aid, along with the humanitarian and living repercussions documented by various human rights and humanitarian reports.
The participants in the seminar called for urgent action to lift the siege and support the people of the city of Taiz and to put an end to their ongoing suffering.
The seminar comes as part of the ongoing efforts made by the program to highlight the reality of the Houthi project and its dangers to Yemen, and to reveal what the siege of Taiz represents as a violation of the rights of the population and practices that contradict the slogans raised by the militia, in addition to enhancing community awareness of the rights of the city’s residents and the duty to support and stand in solidarity with them.
