Five people were killed and at least 10 others were injured today (Saturday) in a shooting incident near the main market square in Krakow, southern Poland, confirming the arrest of the attacker, according to the TVN24 channel citing fire department teams.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote in a post on the “X” platform that the police are investigating the shooting incident, confirming that he is receiving briefings about it from the Ministry of Interior.
Polish media reported that an armed man opened fire on a crowd gathered in the square to participate in an anti-government demonstration organized nearby, while reports indicated that the police managed to neutralize the suspect as he attempted to flee.
Videos circulating on social media showed a police officer shooting at a man lying on the ground, while security, ambulance, and emergency teams rushed to the scene, with an air ambulance participating in the response operations.
The spokesperson for the commander of the fire department in the Lower Silesia region, Captain Hubert Cebula, stated that the shooting occurred after 3 PM local time, noting that the shots were fired from a moving vehicle.
The police have asked residents in the vicinity of the incident not to leave their homes, while authorities continue to investigate to determine the circumstances and motives behind the shooting.
A demonstration was scheduled to take place in the square before the incident, and it is still unclear whether the shooting is related to the protest gathering or the motives of the suspect.
