The Kenyan Ministry of Health announced an increase in the number of confirmed cases of the Ebola virus from the “Bundibugyo” strain to 7 cases, including one death, after recording four new infections (on Saturday), which included three healthcare workers who participated in the care of the first patient with the virus in the country, amid intensive precautionary measures to prevent the transmission of infection outside the circle of contacts.

The ministry confirmed that the four new infected individuals were in quarantine before showing symptoms, and they were transferred to medical isolation to receive the necessary care, noting that there is currently no evidence of the virus spreading among the general population.

Infection of 3 Healthcare Workers and One Relative of the Deceased

Health authorities explained that the new cases include three healthcare workers who dealt with the first confirmed infection, in addition to one relative of the patient himself, who died on October 5.

The first case in Kenya was reported in a Kenyan man approximately 40 years old, who returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo via Uganda and arrived in Nairobi on October 3, before his infection was confirmed in the laboratory and he died two days later.

The subsequent infections are the first known cases of virus transmission within Kenya, after the first case was linked to travel from an area experiencing a widespread outbreak of the disease.

130 Contacts Under Monitoring

The Kenyan Ministry of Health revealed that 130 individuals who came into contact with the first patient have been identified, including family members, healthcare workers, and travelers, confirming that 128 of them are under quarantine, while efforts continue to reach the remaining two individuals.

It noted that the discovery of the four new cases within quarantine has contributed to reducing the likelihood of transmission to other individuals, especially since the infected were under monitoring before showing symptoms.

It added that the two patients whose infections were confirmed earlier, on October 14 and 16, are in stable condition and responding to medical care.

World Health Organization Supports Containment Efforts

For its part, the World Health Organization confirmed its continued support for the Kenyan authorities in responding to the outbreak by providing medical supplies, enhancing early detection capabilities, tracking contacts, and implementing infection prevention measures within healthcare facilities.

The organization stated in a statement issued on October 16 that the second and third cases were discovered during quarantine, reflecting the importance of early monitoring of contacts in breaking the chains of virus transmission.

It also emphasized the need for continued health coordination across borders, given the link between Kenyan infections and the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Over 4,400 Deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The registration of infections in Kenya comes amid the ongoing widespread outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since last May.

According to the latest data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control available until October 15, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 9,277 confirmed cases, including 4,478 deaths, with the majority of cases concentrated in the Ituri and North Kivu regions in the eastern part of the country.

The continued transmission of the virus in border areas raises concerns about the arrival of additional cases in neighboring countries, especially with the movement of travel, trade, and mobility among local communities.

How Does the Bundibugyo Virus Spread?

The Bundibugyo virus belongs to the group of viruses that cause Ebola disease and spreads among humans through direct contact with the blood of an infected person or their bodily fluids, or by touching tools and surfaces contaminated with these fluids.

The virus does not typically spread through casual contact with individuals who do not show symptoms of the disease, while the risk of infection increases among family members and medical staff when dealing with infected individuals without taking appropriate precautions.

Symptoms include fever, severe fatigue, headache, and muscle pain, which may progress to vomiting, diarrhea, and serious disorders, with the possibility of bleeding in some patients.

No Approved Vaccine for This Strain

One of the main health challenges is the lack of an approved vaccine or specific treatment against the Bundibugyo strain, unlike some medical interventions approved for another strain of Ebola viruses.

The care of infected individuals relies on early medical intervention, fluid replacement, management of complications, and monitoring of vital functions, which are procedures that can improve survival chances.

The World Health Organization emphasizes that rapid detection of infections, isolation, and contact tracing are fundamental pillars for containing the outbreak.

Is There a Risk of Wider Spread?

Despite the increase in cases in Kenya, health authorities confirm that the infections discovered so far are linked to the first patient and that there is no evidence of widespread community transmission.

However, the infection of three healthcare workers highlights the importance of tightening infection control measures within hospitals, while the risk of additional cases remains among contacts during the monitoring period.

The World Health Organization had classified the risk of the Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high within the country, high in neighboring countries, and low at the global level, while continuing to assess the specific risks in Kenya.

The organization did not recommend imposing general travel or trade restrictions based on the available information, emphasizing the importance of health monitoring and international cooperation to prevent the outbreak from widening.
