An agreement extending for three years to support joint research, knowledge exchange, and the qualification of specialized competencies in the healthcare sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
The Cambridge Health Group, a subsidiary of Amanat Holdings PJSC and a global leader in healthcare and post-acute care services, signed a memorandum of understanding with Heriot-Watt University, extending for three years, aimed at enhancing scientific research and innovation in the fields of rehabilitation, long-term care, and specialized healthcare.
The memorandum combines the specialized medical expertise of the Cambridge Health Group in long-term care and post-acute rehabilitation through its facilities, with the research expertise of Heriot-Watt University in improving health and quality of life with aging, and developing robotic rehabilitation technologies and assistive devices. The university benefits in these areas from the capabilities of the Global Institute for Health and Care Technologies and the National Robotics Centre, which employ integrated expertise in engineering, artificial intelligence, and behavioral sciences to find solutions to the complex challenges facing the healthcare sector. The university has an international presence that includes five campuses in Scotland, Dubai, and Malaysia, along with plans to open a new campus in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Cambridge Health Group is the largest specialized operator of post-acute care services, including rehabilitation and long-term care, through inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and home care. During 2026, the group increased the capacity of its main facility in Jeddah from 130 to 200 beds and launched home care services to extend its rehabilitation and long-term care services beyond the hospital to patients’ homes. The group works closely with the Saudi Ministry of Health and continues to expand its presence in the Kingdom, including additional expansion in Jeddah and a new facility planned in Riyadh, in support of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to increase the capacity for specialized care and enhance private sector participation in the healthcare sector.
The collaboration aims to strengthen the link between scientific research and medical practice, opening avenues for developing innovative solutions and assessing their effectiveness in enhancing rehabilitation services, promoting patient independence, and improving the quality of life for individuals with complex health conditions requiring specialized and continuous care.
The agreement also allows medical teams at the Cambridge Health Group and researchers at Heriot-Watt University to identify additional areas for joint research and seek local and international research grants, in collaboration with government entities and institutions operating in the sector.
Areas of collaboration include developing specialized competencies in healthcare in the region through academic training programs, executive education, and professional development designed to meet specialized needs. Initiatives include supervising postgraduate research, providing practical training opportunities and training in work environments, along with mentoring and career guidance programs, enhancing the integration between academic training and practical experience, and supporting the development of national competencies in the healthcare sector in the Kingdom.
Professor Heather McGregor, Executive Member at Heriot-Watt University, stated: “Universities play a pivotal role in ensuring that research responds to community needs, extending its benefits beyond the academic realm. Through our partnership with the Cambridge Health Group, we aim to strengthen our researchers’ connection to the issues and challenges shaping healthcare practices, providing opportunities to translate knowledge into tangible improvements in the level of care provided. We also look forward to contributing to the development of the skills and expertise needed in the region to keep pace with the continuous evolution in the healthcare sector through education, professional development, and gaining practical experience. We hope that our joint collaboration will yield positive results with a tangible and sustainable impact.”
For his part, Wael Abdullah, CEO of the Cambridge Health Group, said: “With the continuous evolution of healthcare systems in the region, the integration of scientific research, medical expertise, and the actual needs of patients becomes increasingly important in enhancing the level of specialized care. We at the Cambridge Health Group believe in the pivotal role of research and innovation in improving healthcare outcomes and continuing to develop post-acute care services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Our collaboration with Heriot-Watt University provides opportunities to leverage academic expertise in developing medical practices, enhancing the capabilities of our specialized staff, and contributing to the long-term advancement of the sector.”
This memorandum represents a step towards transforming scientific research outcomes into practical applications that contribute to the development of specialized healthcare, benefiting patients, medical staff, and the healthcare sector as a whole.
