In the relations between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, distances are not measured in kilometers, but rather by the speed of response when crises intensify, and by the sincerity of support when solidarity becomes a responsibility. From here, the phrase “distance of the track” gains its meaning, expressing a closeness that has been solidified by experiences, and a brotherhood that both countries recognize its value, regardless of the noise from those who pass by on its margins.
** Brotherhood Created by Stances
Egypt has never been far from the heart of Saudi Arabia, nor has the Kingdom been absent from Egypt’s difficult events. During the Tripartite Aggression in 1956, Saudi Arabia, led by King Saud, stood by Egypt, supporting its right to sovereignty and its confrontation with aggression. The stance was clear in a situation where Cairo needed its brothers, and Riyadh understood that targeting Egypt affects the security of the entire Arab world.
After the June 1967 War, King Faisal’s position emerged in calling for support for the affected Arab countries and providing assistance to help them withstand. Perhaps the deeper lesson from that period is that the political disagreements that preceded it did not prevent the Kingdom from standing with Egypt in its ordeal; Saudi Arabia’s vision expanded beyond the disagreements of the time, prioritizing the responsibility of brotherhood over settling scores.
Then came the October War in 1973, writing another chapter in that history. The Egyptian fighter engaged in the battle to reclaim his land, while Saudi Arabia, led by King Faisal, supported the Arab effort and contributed to using oil as a pressure tool against countries supporting Israel. This was a decision with its political and economic costs, and a testament that solidarity is tested by the responsibilities countries bear and the stances they take.
** Solidarity is a History of Mutual Stances
These pages are not a record of favors; brotherhood is more noble than that. The relationship also has its reciprocal face, as Egypt participated in the coalition that liberated Kuwait and stood by its brothers in protecting Gulf security. Thus, trust accumulates through stances exchanged by countries when they realize that the danger to one threatens the stability of all.
When we talk about the depth of Saudi stances towards Egypt, we evoke historical ties that cannot be reduced to current political calculations, and a solid brotherhood governed by common interests and mutual respect, within the framework established by the institutions and systems of the states.
** The Horns of Sedition Do Not Make History
However, some opportunists are not pleased with this legacy; they thrive on tension, searching in every circumstance for a truncated phrase or a disagreement that can be exaggerated, then presenting it as material to inflame emotions. They want to turn discussion into enmity, and enmity into a rift, exploiting ignorance and quick tempers, as if the history of the two countries can be reduced to a clip or a post.
Criticism is a right, and differences in assessing interests are valid, but inciting against an entire people, or insulting a brotherly country, does not create a responsible opinion. Those who deliberately insult Egyptians in the name of defending Saudi Arabia, or insult Saudis in the name of caring for Egypt, harm the value they claim to protect. The dignity of nations is not preserved by igniting sedition among their people.
** Awareness Preserves the Dignity of Both Countries
The wise in both countries know that these voices do not represent the reality of relations between the two peoples. They understand that what binds them together in kinship, ties, interests, and memories is greater than the seasons of provocation.
The Saudi-Egyptian relations will continue to need awareness and mutual respect, and voices that preserve the dignity of both countries when they disagree, just as they celebrate their cooperation when they agree. As for the sowers of sedition, their noise will not become history simply because it has risen.
When adversity calls forth the essence of brotherhood, the sincere stance retains its known timing… the distance of the track.
** Maritime Security is a Shared Responsibility
In this context, maritime security in the Red Sea is a shared responsibility regionally and internationally, and it cannot be reduced to one country or solely burdened with the responsibility of protecting the corridors through which the world’s interests pass. These corridors are the arteries of international trade and energy supplies, and any threat to them extends beyond the countries bordering them, affecting supply chains, transportation costs, the economies of countries, and the lives of their peoples. Therefore, protecting freedom of navigation requires cooperation commensurate with the scale of common interests, respecting the sovereignty and security of the countries in the region; it is not acceptable for the world to benefit from these arteries and then leave the responsibility for their protection and costs on one party alone.
** Protecting Security is Not a Favor
When the Kingdom emphasizes the responsibility of brothers and partners in safeguarding common security, it is based on its confidence in its capabilities and its steadfast will to protect its sovereignty, land, and people, and its belief that regional security is a shared responsibility. In doing so, it affirms the responsibility of all, stemming from a unity of destiny and interconnected interests, and an understanding of the importance of cooperation in facing common threats, protecting vital corridors, and ensuring trade and energy supplies as interests that transcend the borders of any one country. Standing against these threats is not a favor from one party to another, but a shared responsibility to safeguard a security that benefits everyone and affects them when it is threatened.
