The English club Brentford referred the incident of kicking a rugby ball from a high-rise residential building towards its stadium to the police, after a video documenting the incident went viral during the team’s match against Liverpool on Saturday, as part of the Premier League.
The video showed a person kicking the ball from a high balcony that is surrounded by glass barriers, towards the “Gtech Community” stadium, before the ball hit the roof of the east stand. Another clip showed a stadium worker carrying the rugby ball away from the field, indicating that it had reached inside the stadium.
Brentford issued a statement on Monday confirming that the incident had been referred to the police, supporting the authorities in the investigation to identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which could lead to criminal prosecution.
The club stated in its announcement: “Such behavior is dangerous and can cause serious harm,” emphasizing that the safety of fans, staff, players, and referees during match days is a top priority.
The incident raises concerns regarding the safety of those present in the stadium, especially since Brentford’s stadium is located in a residential area surrounded by high buildings, allowing some residents to overlook the pitch from their apartments.
The spread of the video on social media increases fears about the repetition of similar behaviors, as those who commit such acts may be encouraged to imitate them in pursuit of attention, putting those inside the stadium at risk of injury.
The published information did not include an official confirmation regarding the identification of the person seen in the video or any charges against them, nor were the circumstances of how the ball reached the field clearly established, or whether it caused any injuries.
The incident occurred during a match that ended with Liverpool defeating Brentford 2-1, after the visiting team managed to turn around a deficit into a victory, in a match that also saw two red cards issued to the home team.
