رفضت صحيفة «نيويورك تايمز» الأمريكية الضغوط الإسرائيلية الرامية لسحب مقال استقصائي، كشف عن ارتكاب قوات الأمن والمحققين الإسرائيليين اعتداءات جنسية وعمليات اغتصاب ممنهجة بحق معتقلين فلسطينيين، مؤكدة تمسكها بصحة الشهادات الموثقة التي تضمنها المقال.
ويستند المقال، الذي يحمل عنوان «الصمت الذي يواجه اغتصاب الفلسطينيين» ونشر يوم 11 مايو الجاري، إلى مقابلات أجراها للكاتب نيكولاس كريستوف، الحائز على جائزة بوليتزر مرتين، مع 14 فلسطينياً رجالاً ونساءً وبعض الأطفال يصفون تعرضهم لاعتداءات جنسية داخل مراكز الاحتجاز الإسرائيلية، على يد حراس السجون والجنود والمستوطنين والمحققين.
وفي بيان رسمي، دافعت الصحيفة عن المقال، مؤكدة أن كريستوف استند إلى شهادات مباشرة من الضحايا، مدعومة بتقارير مستقلة من منظمات حقوقية دولية وإسرائيلية مثل «بتسيلم»، وتقارير الأمم المتحدة التي تشير إلى نمط من العنف الجنسي والتعذيب في السجون الإسرائيلية منذ 7 أكتوبر 2023، مشددة على أن محاولات التشكيك في المصادر لن تثنيها عن تغطيتها المستقلة.
وأوضحت الصحيفة أن الهجوم الإسرائيلي -الذي وصف الحقائق الموثقة بـ«الفرية»- لن يثنيها عن مواصلة تغطيتها المستقلة، مؤكدة أن الانتهاكات التي كشفها المقال تستند إلى وقائع ميدانية واعترافات أدلى بها الضحايا بكلماتهم الخاصة.
ووصفت الخارجية الإسرائيلية المقال بأنه «واحد من أسوأ الفريات في التاريخ الإعلامي الحديث»، معتبرة إياه محاولة لقلب الحقائق رأساً على عقب.
واتهمت إسرائيل بعض المصادر المستخدمة في المقال بارتباطها بـ«حماس» أو بتنظيمات معادية، ووصفت بعض ما جاء فيه مثل استخدام كلاب للاعتداء الجنسي بأنها «دعاية كاريكاتورية غير قابلة للتصديق».
وجاء المقال وسط تقارير متزايدة من منظمات حقوقية عن تدهور أوضاع الأسرى الفلسطينيين، بما في ذلك حالات وفيات في السجون وشكاوى تعذيب.
وشددت «نيويورك تايمز» على أنه «لا صحة على الإطلاق» لشائعات سحب المقال، وأعادت التأكيد على مصداقية كريستوف كمراسل متخصص في تغطية العنف الجنسي في مناطق النزاع.
The American newspaper “The New York Times” rejected Israeli pressures to withdraw an investigative article that revealed the systematic sexual assaults and rapes committed by Israeli security forces and investigators against Palestinian detainees, affirming its commitment to the validity of the documented testimonies included in the article.
The article, titled “The Silence Facing the Rape of Palestinians,” published on May 11, is based on interviews conducted by writer Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, with 14 Palestinians, both men and women, as well as some children, describing their experiences of sexual assaults inside Israeli detention centers at the hands of prison guards, soldiers, settlers, and investigators.
In an official statement, the newspaper defended the article, asserting that Kristof relied on direct testimonies from the victims, supported by independent reports from international and Israeli human rights organizations such as “B’Tselem,” and United Nations reports indicating a pattern of sexual violence and torture in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023, emphasizing that attempts to question the sources would not deter it from its independent coverage.
The newspaper clarified that the Israeli attack—describing the documented facts as “a fabrication”—would not prevent it from continuing its independent coverage, affirming that the violations revealed in the article are based on field facts and confessions made by the victims in their own words.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the article as “one of the worst fabrications in modern media history,” considering it an attempt to turn the facts upside down.
Israel accused some of the sources used in the article of being linked to “Hamas” or hostile organizations, and described some of the claims, such as the use of dogs for sexual assault, as “unbelievable caricature propaganda.”
The article came amid increasing reports from human rights organizations about the deteriorating conditions of Palestinian prisoners, including cases of deaths in prisons and complaints of torture.
“The New York Times” emphasized that there is “absolutely no truth” to the rumors of withdrawing the article, and reiterated Kristof’s credibility as a reporter specializing in covering sexual violence in conflict zones.
