A series of studies published by the journal “The Lancet” warned of the association between problematic use of digital media and risks to mental health, sleep, and physical activity among those under 25 years old.

The research was based on a comprehensive review that included 121 previous scientific reviews, covering about 2,790 original studies and more than 9 million people aged between zero and 24 years, in an attempt to assess the relationship between digital media use and the health of children, adolescents, and young adults.

The researchers concluded that there are associations between problematic digital media use, characterized by patterns of addictive-like use, and increased risks of mental health issues, sleep disorders, and decreased physical activity. However, they emphasized that the strength of the evidence remains limited, and the results do not prove that digital use is the direct cause of these problems.

Researcher Louise Holly from the Digital Health Transformations Lab stated that the available evidence is still inconclusive, and the withholding of data by technology companies from independent researchers limits the ability to understand the impact of platform design and its characteristics on users.

Holly criticized allowing technology companies to set their own rules for extended periods, considering that business models based on capturing user attention and collecting their data prioritize commercial growth at the expense of health considerations.

In an estimate of the potential global health burden, researcher Falk Müller-Reimenschneider noted that spending more than two hours a day in front of screens may be associated with the loss of about 2.8 million years of healthy life annually due to depression, and 240,000 years due to obesity.

However, the researchers emphasized that these figures are illustrative estimates of the potential risks and not a direct measurement of actual harms, given the limited evidence and the unresolved causal relationship between screen time and health outcomes.

The results do not imply that all forms of digital use are harmful; the review also noted positive associations between moderate digital media use and increased psychological well-being, as well as between playing video games that require physical activity and improvements in some health and lifestyle indicators, indicating that the impact varies depending on the nature of the content, the manner of use, the age of the user, and the context in which the use occurs.

The authors of the series believe that relying solely on age restrictions for users or banning children and adolescents from accessing social networks will not be sufficient to mitigate risks. They call for technology companies to be required to assess the potential health harms of new digital products and features before their launch, and to make data available to independent researchers working for the public good.

They also propose reaching a global framework through the World Health Organization to establish basic standards for regulating the digital environment, preventing weak controls in one country from undermining protective efforts in other countries, as well as establishing an international body specialized in monitoring the risks that artificial intelligence may impose on children and youth.

These calls come amid the growing use of smartphones, social media platforms, and digital games among younger age groups, and the rising international debate regarding the responsibility of technology companies for the potential effects of their platform designs, including infinite scrolling, autoplay, and recommendation systems that encourage users to continue watching and interacting.
