A strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Panama yesterday (Friday), causing buildings and roads to collapse in the central part of the country and injuring at least 27 people, with no fatalities reported, according to authorities.
Residents across the country felt the earthquake, which occurred at a shallow depth, according to a statement from the national civil protection system.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the tremor occurred at 12:56 PM local time, locating its epicenter about 10 kilometers from the small town of Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera Province in the central part of the country.
The French press agency clarified that the recorded injuries were minor, while authorities issued a warning about the possibility of tsunami waves in the eastern Pacific Ocean, before lifting the warning later.
The quake caused damage to several buildings and facilities, while the strength of the tremor prompted residents to evacuate some buildings as a precaution. Authorities confirmed that navigation in the Panama Canal was not affected by the earthquake, and transit operations continued normally.
Relevant authorities are still monitoring the damage caused by the earthquake and assessing the conditions in the affected areas.
