تحول اللاعب الكرواتي لوكا مودريتش من طفل لاجئ في زمن الحرب إلى أحد أعظم لاعبي خط الوسط في العصر الحديث، مع سجل مليء بالألقاب الفردية والجماعية، إذ ولد «لوكا» في ظروف صعبة جداً خلال فترة حرب البلقان عام 1985، التي فقد فيها جده في الحرب، واضطرت عائلته للنزوح والعيش كلاجئين في فنادق بسيطة.
وبدأ لعب كرة القدم في مواقف السيارات وملاعب صغيرة، ما ساهم في تطوير مهاراته الفنية رغم الظروف الصعبة، إذ بدأ في أكاديميات محلية، ثم انضم إلى دينامو زغرب عام 2002، وانتقل بنظام الإعارة إلى زرينيسكي موستار (2003-2004)، وبعدها انتقل إلى إنتر زابريشيتش (2004–2005)، قبل عودته إلى دينامو زغرب موسم 2005، ولعب وقتها 94 مباراة، سجل خلالها 31 هدفاً، وحقق 5 بطولات في دوري وكأس كرواتيا. وبعد بروزه محلياً، انتقل إلى توتنهام هوتسبير عام 2008، في صفقة بلغت نحو 16.5 مليون جنيه إسترليني، قبل انتقاله لاحقاً إلى ريال مدريد، مقابل 40 مليون يورو، وتشير التقارير إلى أنه لم يُحسم مستقبله حتى الآن ، وأنه مستمر مع ميلان، بعد انتقاله الحر إلى الدوري الإيطالي.

The Croatian player Luka Modrić transformed from a refugee child during wartime into one of the greatest midfielders of the modern era, with a record filled with individual and collective titles. Luka was born in very difficult circumstances during the Balkan War in 1985, during which he lost his grandfather in the conflict, and his family was forced to flee and live as refugees in simple hotels.
He started playing football in parking lots and small fields, which contributed to the development of his technical skills despite the tough conditions. He began in local academies, then joined Dinamo Zagreb in 2002, and was loaned to Zrinjski Mostar (2003-2004), after which he moved to Inter Zaprešić (2004–2005), before returning to Dinamo Zagreb in the 2005 season. At that time, he played 94 matches, scoring 31 goals, and won 5 titles in the Croatian League and Cup. After his local emergence, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 for a fee of around £16.5 million, before later transferring to Real Madrid for €40 million. Reports indicate that his future has not yet been decided, and he continues with Milan after a free transfer to Serie A.
