أعلنت السلطات الصحية تفشي مرض غامض في بوروندي، أسفر عن وفاة خمسة أشخاص على الأقل وإصابة 28 آخرين، في تطور أثار قلقاً متزايداً لدى الجهات الصحية الدولية.
وسُجلت جميع الحالات في منطقة مقاطعة مباندا شمال البلاد، بالقرب من الحدود مع جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، ما يزيد المخاوف من احتمال انتقال العدوى عبر الحدود.
تحرك عاجل للتحقيق
وأوفدت السلطات الصحية فرقاً متخصصة إلى المنطقة، بدعم من منظمة الصحة العالمية، للتحقيق في طبيعة المرض وتحديد أسبابه.
ولا تزال المعلومات حول المرض محدودة، إلا أن الأعراض المسجلة تشمل الحمى، القيء، الإسهال، وجود دم في البول، اليرقان وفقر الدم في الحالات الشديدة.
استبعاد أمراض خطيرة
وأظهرت التحاليل المخبرية نتائج سلبية لعدد من الأمراض الفيروسية الخطيرة، منها: إيبولا، فيروس ماربورغ، حمى الوادي المتصدع، الحمى الصفراء، حمى القرم-الكونغو النزفية.
وهو ما يُعد مؤشراً مطمئناً نسبياً، رغم استمرار الغموض حول السبب الحقيقي للحالات.
احتمال مرض جديد
ويركز المحققون حالياً على تحديد ما إذا كان المرض تحوراً لمرض معروف، أو تهديداً صحياً جديداً ناشئاً.
وأكدت منظمة الصحة العالمية أن نتائج الفحوصات القادمة ستحدد ما إذا كانت الإجراءات الحالية كافية، أو أن هناك حاجة لتدخل أوسع يشمل تنسيقاً عبر الحدود.
تصريحات رسمية
قالت وزيرة الصحة في بوروندي، ليدوين بدراهانا: «رغم أن النتائج الأولية تستبعد الأمراض الخطيرة، فإن التحقيقات مستمرة لتحديد السبب، ويتم اتخاذ كل الإجراءات اللازمة لحماية الصحة العامة ومنع انتشار العدوى».
انتشار محدود حتى الآن
وسُجلت الحالات الأولى في 31 مارس، ولا تزال الإصابات حتى الآن محصورة بين أفراد أسرة واحدة والمخالطين المقربين، ما قد يساعد في احتواء التفشي.
دعم دولي وتحذيرات
وتعمل منظمة غافي بالتعاون مع منظمة الصحة العالمية لدعم جهود التحقيق والاستجابة.
وأكدت المنظمة أن مثل هذه التفشيات تبرز أهمية الاستعداد والاستجابة السريعة للأوبئة.
سوابق مقلقة
وليست هذه المرة الأولى التي تواجه فيها بوروندي مرضاً غامضاً، إذ شهدت البلاد عام 2023 تفشياً مماثلاً أدى إلى وفاة ثلاثة أشخاص، مع أعراض تشبه إيبولا وماربورغ، دون التوصل إلى سبب واضح.
تحديات صحية متزايدة
وتواجه بوروندي أيضاً عودة انتشار الكوليرا، إذ تم تسجيل أكثر من 3500 حالة العام الماضي، مع استمرار انتقال العدوى هذا العام.
كما صنفت السلطات الصحية البريطانية البلاد ضمن المناطق المعرضة لخطر انتشار جدري القرود.
The health authorities have announced an outbreak of a mysterious disease in Burundi, which has resulted in the deaths of at least five people and the infection of 28 others, in a development that has raised increasing concern among international health entities.
All cases have been recorded in the Mbanda district in the north of the country, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, heightening fears of potential cross-border transmission of the infection.
Urgent Action for Investigation
The health authorities have dispatched specialized teams to the area, supported by the World Health Organization, to investigate the nature of the disease and identify its causes.
Information about the disease remains limited, but the recorded symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in urine, jaundice, and anemia in severe cases.
Exclusion of Serious Diseases
Laboratory analyses have shown negative results for several serious viral diseases, including: Ebola, Marburg virus, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.
This is considered a relatively reassuring indicator, despite the ongoing uncertainty regarding the true cause of the cases.
Possibility of a New Disease
Investigators are currently focusing on determining whether the disease is a mutation of a known illness or a new emerging health threat.
The World Health Organization has confirmed that the results of upcoming tests will determine whether current measures are sufficient or if there is a need for broader intervention that includes cross-border coordination.
Official Statements
Burundi’s Minister of Health, Lydwine Bihanga, stated: “Although the preliminary results exclude serious diseases, investigations are ongoing to determine the cause, and all necessary measures are being taken to protect public health and prevent the spread of infection.”
Limited Spread So Far
The first cases were recorded on March 31, and so far, the infections have been confined to members of a single family and close contacts, which may help contain the outbreak.
International Support and Warnings
The Gavi organization is working in collaboration with the World Health Organization to support investigation and response efforts.
The organization emphasized that such outbreaks highlight the importance of preparedness and rapid response to epidemics.
Concerning Precedents
This is not the first time Burundi has faced a mysterious disease, as the country experienced a similar outbreak in 2023 that led to the deaths of three people, with symptoms resembling those of Ebola and Marburg, without a clear cause being identified.
Increasing Health Challenges
Burundi is also facing a resurgence of cholera, with more than 3,500 cases recorded last year, and the transmission of the infection continues this year.
Additionally, British health authorities have classified the country among the areas at risk for the spread of monkeypox.
