في كل فترة يعود الجدل حول أقدمية الأندية السعودية وعمادة الرياضة الوطنية، إلّا أن التاريخ يظل أكثر إنصافاً من الميول، وأكثر دقة من الاجتهادات الشخصية؛ لأن الوقائع الموثقة لا تتغير بتغير الآراء.
فالثابت تاريخياً أن نادي الاتحاد تأسس عام 1346هـ الموافق 1927م في مدينة جدة، وهو التاريخ الذي استقر في السجلات الرياضية والوثائق الرسمية، ومنه استمد النادي لقبه الشهير «العميد»، بوصفه أقدم نادٍ رياضي سعودي قائم حتى اليوم.
ولم تكن عمادة الاتحاد مجرد لقب جماهيري أو إعلامي، بل حظيت بتأكيدات من شخصيات وطنية رفيعة عبر مراحل مختلفة من تاريخ المملكة. ومن أشهر تلك الشهادات ما ذكره الأمير سلطان بن عبدالعزيز- رحمه الله- عندما أكد أن الاتحاد هو أقدم نادٍ في المملكة العربية السعودية. وتكتسب هذه الشهادة أهمية خاصة؛ لأنها صدرت من رجل دولة عاصر مراحل طويلة من تاريخ المملكة والرياضة السعودية، وكان مطلعاً على كثير من تفاصيلها وتحولاتها.
كما أن الملك عبدالله بن عبدالعزيز- رحمه الله- وصف الاتحاد في أكثر من مناسبة بأنه «عميد الأندية السعودية»، وهو توصيف يعكس ما استقر عليه الوعي الرياضي السعودي لعقود طويلة.
ومن الوقائع التاريخية التي تستحق التوقف عندها احتفال نادي الوحدة باليوبيل الذهبي عام 1416هـ، حيث احتفى النادي بمرور خمسين عاماً على مرحلة مهمة من تاريخه، وشهد الاحتفال حضور عدد من الرواد والمؤسسين الأوائل الذين عاصروا بدايات النادي وأسهموا في بنائه. وقد مثل ذلك الاحتفال شهادة تاريخية حية على المراحل التي مرت بها الحركة الرياضية في مكة المكرمة وعلى تطور الكيانات الرياضية وأسمائها عبر العقود.
إن الإشارة إلى هذه الوقائع لا تنتقص من تاريخ أي نادٍ سعودي عريق، فالوحدة والاتحاد والأهلي والنصر والهلال وغيرها من الأندية تمثل جزءاً أصيلاً من تاريخ الرياضة الوطنية. غير أن احترام التاريخ يقتضي التمييز بين تاريخ الكيان الرياضي بمختلف مراحله، وبين تاريخ التأسيس الرسمي الذي استقرت عليه الوثائق والشهادات المعاصرة للأحداث.
ولهذا ظل لقب «العميد» ملازماً لنادي الاتحاد جيلاً بعد جيل، ليس لأنه لقب أطلقته الجماهير أو الإعلام فحسب، وإنما لأنه يستند إلى أقدمية تاريخية موثقة، وإلى شهادات رسمية وشعبية متعاقبة أكدت أن الاتحاد كان ولا يزال أقدم الأندية الرياضية السعودية.
فالتاريخ لا يُكتب بالرغبات، ولا تُصنع الحقائق بالجدل، وإنما تحفظها الوثائق ويؤكدها الشهود، ولذلك بقي الاتحاد عميداً للأندية السعودية، وبقيت عمادته حقيقة تاريخية راسخة تجاوزت حدود المنافسة الرياضية إلى الوطن .

Historically, it is established that Al-Ittihad Club was founded in 1346 AH, corresponding to 1927 AD, in the city of Jeddah, which is the date that has been settled in sports records and official documents. From this, the club derived its famous nickname “The Dean,” as it is the oldest existing Saudi sports club to this day.
The deanship of Al-Ittihad was not just a popular or media title, but it was confirmed by prominent national figures throughout various stages of the Kingdom’s history. One of the most famous testimonies was made by Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz – may God have mercy on him – when he affirmed that Al-Ittihad is the oldest club in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This testimony holds special importance because it came from a statesman who witnessed long phases of the Kingdom’s history and Saudi sports and was knowledgeable about many of its details and transformations.
Additionally, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz – may God have mercy on him – described Al-Ittihad on several occasions as “The Dean of Saudi Clubs,” a description that reflects what has been established in Saudi sports awareness for many decades.
Among the historical facts worth noting is the celebration of Al-Wahda Club’s golden jubilee in 1416 AH, where the club celebrated fifty years of an important phase in its history, and the celebration was attended by several pioneers and founding members who witnessed the beginnings of the club and contributed to its establishment. This celebration represented a living historical testimony to the stages that the sports movement in Mecca went through and to the development of sports entities and their names over the decades.
Referring to these facts does not diminish the history of any ancient Saudi club, as Al-Wahda, Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nasr, Al-Hilal, and other clubs represent an integral part of the history of national sports. However, respecting history requires distinguishing between the history of the sports entity in its various stages and the official founding history that has been settled in contemporary documents and testimonies of the events.
Therefore, the title “The Dean” has remained associated with Al-Ittihad Club from generation to generation, not only because it is a title given by fans or the media, but because it is based on documented historical seniority and on successive official and popular testimonies that confirmed that Al-Ittihad was and still is the oldest Saudi sports club.
History is not written by desires, and facts are not created by debate; rather, they are preserved by documents and confirmed by witnesses. Therefore, Al-Ittihad remains the Dean of Saudi clubs, and its deanship remains a solid historical fact that transcends the boundaries of sports competition to the nation.
