ارتفعت حصيلة ضحايا الزلزال العنيف الذي ضرب جنوب الفلبين صباح (الإثنين) إلى 15 قتيلاً على الأقل، فيما أصيب 129 شخصاً بجروح متفاوتة، وفقاً لما أعلنته السلطات المحلية.
وضرب الزلزال، الذي بلغت قوته 7.8 درجة على مقياس ريختر، المناطق الواقعة قبالة سواحل مدينة جنرال سانتوس في جزيرة مينداناو، أكبر جزر جنوب الفلبين، عند الساعة 7:37 صباحاً بالتوقيت المحلي (23:37 بتوقيت غرينتش).
وذكر المعهد الفلبيني لعلوم البراكين والزلازل أن الهزة الأرضية وقعت على عمق 10 كيلومترات، ما ساهم في زيادة تأثيرها على المناطق القريبة من مركز الزلزال.
وعقب الهزة القوية، أصدرت دول عدة في المنطقة، من بينها الفلبين وإندونيسيا واليابان، تحذيرات من احتمال وقوع أمواج تسونامي، قبل أن يتم رفع معظم هذه التحذيرات لاحقاً بعد تراجع مستوى الخطر.
وتسببت الكارثة الطبيعية في حالة من الذعر بين السكان، فيما تواصل فرق الإنقاذ والطوارئ عمليات البحث وتقييم الأضرار في المناطق المتضررة.
من جانبه، أكد الرئيس الفلبيني فرديناند ماركوس الابن أن الحكومة تحركت بشكل فوري للتعامل مع تداعيات الزلزال، مشيراً إلى أنه أصدر تعليمات لجميع الجهات الحكومية المعنية باتخاذ الإجراءات اللازمة بشكل عاجل.
ودعا الرئيس المواطنين، خصوصاً القاطنين في المناطق الساحلية والمنخفضة، إلى الالتزام بتعليمات السلطات المحلية والتوجه إلى المناطق المرتفعة كإجراء احترازي، في ظل استمرار مراقبة السواحل ورصد أي تطورات محتملة.
وتخشى السلطات من وقوع هزات ارتدادية خلال الساعات والأيام المقبلة، بينما تستمر عمليات الإغاثة وتقديم المساعدات للمتضررين في المناطق المنكوبة.
The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck southern Philippines on Monday morning has risen to at least 15, while 129 people sustained varying degrees of injuries, according to local authorities.
The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit areas off the coast of General Santos City on Mindanao Island, the largest island in southern Philippines, at 7:37 AM local time (23:37 GMT).
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, which contributed to its impact on areas near the earthquake’s epicenter.
Following the strong tremor, several countries in the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan, issued tsunami warnings, although most of these warnings were later lifted as the threat level decreased.
The natural disaster caused panic among residents, while rescue and emergency teams continue their search and damage assessment operations in the affected areas.
For his part, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that the government acted immediately to address the aftermath of the earthquake, noting that he had instructed all relevant government agencies to take necessary actions urgently.
The president urged citizens, especially those living in coastal and low-lying areas, to adhere to local authorities’ instructions and move to higher ground as a precautionary measure, while monitoring the coasts and tracking any potential developments continues.
Authorities fear aftershocks may occur in the coming hours and days, while relief operations and assistance for those affected in the disaster-stricken areas continue.
