The terrorist attack by the Houthi militia on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in the death of 12 people and the injury of 309 others, sparked a wide wave of Arab and international condemnations, amid assurances of the necessity to protect civilians and vital facilities, while U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of U.S. involvement in strikes against the Houthis.
Washington stands in solidarity with Riyadh
Trump described the attack as “horrific and unacceptable,” and in response to a question about his country’s participation in strikes against the Houthis, he said, “We may participate,” adding that his administration would study the matter and make a swift decision. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the Houthi attacks reflect a disregard for civilian lives, calling for an immediate halt to them, and emphasized Washington’s support for Saudi Arabia and its commitment to its security. British officials condemned the attack, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described attacks targeting civilians and vital infrastructure as heinous acts that cannot be justified by political or military objectives. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen considered the attack a serious escalation that threatens the stability of the region and global transport and energy centers, while German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the attack as a terrorist act targeting the Kingdom and civil aviation.
Targeting civilians is a violation of international law
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, expressing his shock at the casualties and affirming that targeting civilians and civilian facilities constitutes a violation of international law, calling for an immediate cessation of the attacks. The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, described the attacks as a serious escalation that threatens regional security and complicates peace efforts, urging the Houthis to respect international humanitarian law and refrain from targeting civilians and civilian objects.
Widespread Arab solidarity
On the Arab front, condemnations poured in from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Syria, and Iraq, alongside the Yemeni government and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Egypt affirmed that targeting Saudi territory and King Khalid International Airport represents a blatant violation of international law and a disregard for the safety of civilians of various nationalities. Jordan emphasized that the attack is a violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and a threat to its security and stability, while Gulf countries confirmed their full solidarity with Riyadh, warning of the repercussions of targeting civilian facilities on regional security and the safety of air navigation. Pakistan announced its support for Saudi Arabia, its leadership, and its people, affirming its commitment to the Kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security, based on bilateral ties and the Mecca Agreement for mutual defense.
The coalition vows a firm response
In contrast, the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen vowed to respond to the attack firmly, in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.
The spokesman for the coalition forces, Major General Turki Al-Maliki, stated that targeting one of the passenger terminals at King Khalid International Airport, and the resulting fatalities and injuries among travelers and workers, constitutes an attack on a civilian facility, which, in his description, amounts to a complete war crime. Al-Maliki confirmed that the joint forces’ leadership of the coalition would take a firm stance regarding the attack, at a time when international calls are increasing to halt the assaults, prevent escalation, and protect civilians and vital facilities from the repercussions of the confrontation.
