U.S. President Donald Trump announced today the commencement of a ceasefire in the energy sector as part of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump confirmed in a post on the “Truth Social” platform that both parties agreed to a ceasefire in the energy sector, warning against any breach of the agreement.
The U.S. president added, “As of this moment, a ceasefire in the energy sector in the war between Russia and Ukraine is in effect.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that his country is ready to halt its attacks on Russian oil refineries, provided that Moscow stops its attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine. He considered that any steps aimed at easing the conflict between the two countries should be based on the principle of reciprocity and should be accompanied by real guarantees to ensure compliance.
Zelensky stated in a message published via the “Telegram” app today (Sunday) that Ukraine is prepared to take steps to reduce escalation if Russia shows a similar willingness to stop targeting Ukrainian energy facilities, amid ongoing military confrontations between the two sides and their impact on vital infrastructure. He added that he will continue to hold talks with European leaders regarding field developments and his country’s defense needs, noting that communications are ongoing daily to discuss providing new packages of air defense systems, along with the necessary munitions for fighter jets, in order to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities to confront Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian president’s statements come after a remark by U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday (Saturday), in which he called on Ukraine to replace its president, stating that it would be better for Zelensky to stop targeting Russian oil refineries.
In response to Trump’s statements, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha confirmed in a post on the “X” platform today (Sunday) that Zelensky enjoys the support of the Ukrainian people, emphasizing that the people alone have the right to decide their political leadership. Zelensky’s proposal to halt attacks on Russian refineries in exchange for stopping attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities is part of linking any potential de-escalation to mutual commitments, while Kyiv continues its communications with its European partners regarding military support and air defense, amid ongoing disagreements about ways to reduce escalation and end the war.
