An American father’s attempt to silence his five-month-old baby turned into a tragedy that ended with the child’s death and the opening of a criminal case against him, after recordings presented in court revealed a confession attributed to him in which he said he shook his son violently because he “just wanted him to be quiet.”
Authorities in Virginia are considering the case of 22-year-old Nathan Travis Nunley, who faces charges including involuntary manslaughter, child abuse, and intentionally causing serious bodily injury, following the death of his infant son days after being admitted to the hospital.
The incident began when the Hopewell City Police received a report of an unresponsive child inside a home in the city, prompting police and ambulance teams to rush to the scene and find the infant in critical condition threatening his life.
The child was initially taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to specialized medical facilities for necessary care, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit amid intensive efforts to save him, but he died five days later from his injuries.
During a preliminary court session, the prosecution presented a recording of a phone call attributed to the father, in which he discussed the circumstances of what happened. According to the session, he admitted that he yelled at the infant before picking him up and shaking him, explaining that he was trying to stop his continuous crying.
Investigations indicated that the injuries suffered by the child were consistent with what is known as shaken baby syndrome, a dangerous condition that can result from subjecting an infant to violent shaking, potentially leading to severe brain injuries or death.
Alongside the legal proceedings, the child’s mother expressed her shock at the loss of her son, confirming that his departure left a profound impact on the family. Media reports also indicated that the parents were separated at the time of the incident, while investigations continue in preparation for the trial and resolution of the charges against the father.
