Saudi Paralympic national team player Idris Sifiani stole the spotlight at the fifth Asian Paralympic Games “Nagoya 2026,” as his story transformed from the cancellation of a silver medal to standing atop the gold podium, in a thrilling scene that culminated in setting a new record in the Asian Paralympic Games.
The decision to cancel Sifiani’s silver in the 400-meter race for the T20 category came after a video review and a violation related to touching the side line during the race, before he made a strong comeback and clinched first place with a time of 48.25 seconds, setting a new record and giving the Saudi participation one of its most prominent moments on the third day of the games.
The Saudi team raised its tally to 9 medals at the Asian Paralympic Games “Aichi-Nagoya 2026,” consisting of 2 golds, 6 silvers, and 1 bronze, according to the statistics published on the official games website, placing them in twelfth position in the overall ranking.
Athletics made the most significant contribution to the Saudi medal haul, with a total of 6 medals, including 2 golds and 4 silvers, while table tennis added 2 silvers, and Paralympic cycling contributed 1 bronze medal.
Jamaan Al-Zahrani and Idris Sifiani topped the gold medal winners list; Al-Zahrani won the gold in the wheelchair 100-meter race (T53), while Sifiani secured gold in the 400-meter race (T20), recording 48.25 seconds and breaking the record in the history of the Asian Paralympic Games, according to the announced results.
In athletics, the Saudi silvers came from Al-Baraa Al-Qarni in the 100-meter race (T54), Hassan Doushi in the long jump (T20), Hani Al-Nakhli in shot put (F33), and Haidar Salami in shot put, within the (F56/F57) category according to the classification in the official medal table.
In table tennis, Rakan Al-Salmi won silver in the men’s singles for the first category, while Maryam Al-Muraisel added silver in the women’s singles for the same category, and Rashid Al-Ahmari secured bronze in the individual pursuit race over 3000 meters in Paralympic cycling, within the (C3) category.
The results reflect the diversity of Saudi achievements across athletics, table tennis, and cycling, with athletics accounting for two-thirds of the medals achieved, while the remaining medals were distributed between two sports, in a participation that confirms the expansion of Saudi competition in the continental event.
Sifiani’s gold, accompanied by a new Asian Paralympic record, and Al-Zahrani’s gold in the sprint, stand out as the most significant highlights of the Saudi medal tally, while the silver medals contributed to enhancing the team’s total and raising its achievements to nine medals.
Saudi Arabia is participating in the games with a delegation of 41 male and female athletes competing in eight sports, with aspirations to continue winning medals and enhancing the presence of Saudi Paralympic sports on the continental stage at the fifth Asian Paralympic Games “Nagoya 2026.”
