The Iraqi authorities closed the Al-Shayb border crossing with Iran today, Wednesday, to travelers, vehicles, and commercial trucks until further notice, in a move that sources say aims to reassess security arrangements at the crossing, amid reports of a government plan to close other crossings along the Iranian border in the coming days.
Reuters reported that two sources at the crossing confirmed the halt of traffic, while another source clarified that the decision comes to review security procedures, without specifying a date for resuming operations or revealing all details related to the closure.
The Al-Shayb crossing, located in Maysan province in southeastern Iraq, is one of the main crossings connecting the two countries and plays an important role in the movement of travelers, the transport of goods, and trade exchange between Iraq and Iran.
Instructions for Gradual Closure of Crossings
Iraqi media reported that Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaydi directed the closure of the Al-Shayb crossing, with authorities to later begin the gradual closure of several border crossings with Iran.
The final numbers of the crossings that will be affected by the measures are still unclear, among the six border crossings connecting the two countries, and no specific timeline has been announced for implementing the upcoming steps.
The decision comes at a time when the importance of regulatory and security measures at the borders is increasing, especially concerning the movement of trucks and goods, monitoring crossing operations, and preventing the smuggling of prohibited materials.
Previously, Iraqi authorities closed several crossings with Iran in September, including Al-Shayb, Al-Shalamjah, and Al-Mundhiriya, temporarily to review security and administrative procedures.
Sources speaking to Reuters attributed the decision to the necessity of reassessing security arrangements at the Al-Shayb crossing.
Potential Implications for Trade Movement
The duration of the closure remains unspecified, and details regarding potential exceptions or alternative procedures for affected shipments and travelers are still unclear.
Commercial and border circles are awaiting announcements from the Iraqi authorities regarding the resumption of operations at the crossing or the expansion of the closure to include other crossings, amid the ongoing review of security arrangements at the border with Iran.
