The Financial Times revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to resume large-scale military strikes against Iran, after the Israeli army was directed earlier in October to prepare plans for a new military operation, in a move that could return the region to open confrontation and threaten to expand the scope of the war.

According to the report, the Israeli army prepared a plan for a bombing campaign that was set to last several days, scheduled for execution over the weekend of October 10, targeting nuclear facilities and sites linked to the Iranian regime, along with civilian infrastructure, including power generation stations.

The report quoted three people familiar with the plans as saying that the operation was ultimately not carried out due to opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump to resuming the war before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

The report noted that the proposed attack aimed to surpass the intensity level of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign that began against Iran last February, while it remained unclear whether Washington would directly participate in any new operation.

Washington between military pressure and negotiations with Tehran

Despite the postponement of the operation, Trump and Netanyahu continued to issue statements threatening Iran with further attacks, emphasizing the necessity of completing what they described as the military mission against the Iranian regime.

The report quoted one insider on the plans as saying that the resumption of U.S. and Israeli strikes in the coming weeks remains a possibility, noting that the upcoming path could swing between reaching an agreement with Tehran or launching a new attack.

According to the same source, the U.S. objective may be to push Iran to accept negotiating terms related to the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear program, allowing for a settlement that completely ends the war.

In this context, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Israel on Monday and held talks with Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials, according to an Israeli official quoted by the newspaper.

One source also reported that Israeli officials presented an updated list of potential targets inside Iran, based on new intelligence, which included civilian facilities not targeted during previous operations.

However, another source warned that the preparation of the military plan might be part of an effort to increase pressure on Tehran during negotiations, stressing that the final decision regarding the resumption of attacks rests with the U.S. president.

The White House: We will not attack Iran before the November elections

In contrast, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly confirmed to the Financial Times that the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3.

Kelly stated that Iran is facing a very difficult situation on both economic and military levels, adding that U.S. efforts to impose a blockade on Iranian ports and facilitate Gulf oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz are achieving their objectives.

These statements indicate that Washington continues to exert economic and strategic pressure on Tehran, while ruling out a new U.S. attack before the elections, according to the position conveyed by the report from the White House.

Israeli military readiness amid the electoral deadline

On the Israeli side, the army has kept its forces in a high state of readiness for several weeks, taking the unusual step of canceling all soldiers’ leaves starting from Thursday until the date of the Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27.

Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated that this step aims to ensure that the elections are conducted safely and on schedule.

Axios had previously reported that Trump and Netanyahu discussed the possibility of resuming major military operations against Iran before the elections in the United States and Israel, but a U.S. official denied that such a conversation took place, according to what the Financial Times reported.

Netanyahu’s electoral calculations complicate the situation

The military developments coincide with the approach of the Israeli elections, which represent the first broad electoral test for Netanyahu since the events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent wars and regional confrontations.

Most major Israeli opinion polls, according to the report, indicate a slight lead for the opposition bloc over Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, with neither side able to secure a clear majority.

Current and former Israeli security officials fear that launching a new war before the elections could impact the democratic process, even if operations begin after the polling day.

These fears are heightened given that forming a new Israeli government could take weeks of political negotiations, a period during which Netanyahu may remain a transitional prime minister, retaining legal powers to make military decisions, even if he loses the elections.

According to the British newspaper, any decision to resume a large-scale war against Iran at this stage would be an unusual precedent, and it remains unclear how senior Israeli security leaders would respond to any request to resume comprehensive military operations.

Concerns about the escalation of war and rising energy prices

The repercussions of any potential new attack on Iran are not limited to the two sides of the confrontation, as escalation could involve U.S. forces and Arab countries in a renewed war, in addition to its implications for energy markets and shipping in the region.

Targeting energy facilities or escalating confrontations around the Strait of Hormuz could exacerbate risks to global oil supplies and increase energy costs, at a time when Trump is facing political pressure to contain fuel prices ahead of the November elections.

In the latest indicators of political escalation, Trump announced his support for Netanyahu’s re-election, warning that the assumption of any other Israeli leader could leave the United States facing Iran alone, according to statements he published on his platform, Truth Social.

The U.S. president also threatened to launch further attacks if Tehran does not change its approach quickly, stating that Washington and Israel may soon complete their operations.

For his part, Netanyahu released a video on Monday from an Israeli airbase in which he was seen speaking on the phone with Trump, confirming their intention to continue the military mission. The U.S. president responded by praising Netanyahu, in a message reflecting the ongoing political coordination between the two sides, despite the disagreement over the timing of resuming attacks.
