The discussion about thought and philosophy hardly ever ends before it begins anew, and this is obvious given that thought and philosophy are based on a question that recreates itself; perhaps reaching a writer with philosophical roots and intellectual propositions like Dr. Aqila Dubayshi inspires optimism in our cultural milieu, which is currently engaged with topics aspiring to achieve a significant intellectual status in our Arab world. The guest of this space is resistant to functional description; she has presented deconstructive discourses on the ideas and orientations of political Islam groups, being a cultured individual and a researcher in political philosophy and studies on extremism. Her responses provide insights into her personality and influence, so here is the text of the dialogue:

• When did you feel the importance of philosophical studies?

•• I felt the importance of philosophy when I realized that a person without a philosophical question remains governed by dependency and stagnation. Philosophy is not an intellectual luxury; rather, it is a shield that protects the mind from blind adherence to superstition and fanaticism.

• What do you say to those who claim “there is no woman philosopher”?

•• This statement is a product of male centrality and a history written by men. The philosophical history is filled with names; from “Hypatia of Alexandria” through “Hannah Arendt” and “Simone de Beauvoir” to contemporary philosophers. Women have not been absent from thought; rather, their contributions have been obscured by the social and cultural structures that prevailed in ancient and medieval times.

• In the beginning, was it the text or the ideas?

From an existential (ontological) perspective, ideas arise from human experiences and interaction with reality, then the text comes to relate to them, shape them, and open a new horizon for them.

• Must texts be problematic to generate ideas?

•• Yes. A “closed” text that allows only a singular meaning causes thought to wither. The essential characteristic of great texts lies in their interpretive productivity; a text that carries a problem and accepts multiple readings is the text that provokes the mind across ages to generate new ideas and renewed concepts.

• Why did the jurists revolt against the philosophers?

•• The revolt of the jurists was not always a purely religious conflict; rather, it was often a struggle for “the authority of knowledge” and social legitimacy. The jurist sees himself as the guardian of the text and public morals, while the philosopher engages in deconstruction and questioning. In medieval Europe, the church fought philosophers as seen with Giordano Bruno and Galileo, because philosophy, by its nature, disrupts tranquility.

• Where lies the danger of ideas, and how do they affect the sacred?

•• The danger of an idea lies in its ability to deconstruct; it makes the familiar strange and the accepted a subject for discussion. As for the sacred, ideas influence by displacing the superficial and historical to reach the core of faith. The danger appears when “the sacred in itself” is confused with “human understanding of the sacred”; here, philosophy becomes a threat to institutional interests, not to faith itself.

• Can we, through philosophy, subject religious texts to dissection and historicist reading?

•• The mind can subject the religious text to linguistic analysis and historicist reading; studying the reasons for revelation and the contextual circumstances surrounding legislation. However, it is essential to distinguish between: the changing historical aspect: rulings related to a specific environment, and the absolute, fixed aspect: the great ethical and existential values.

• How do you view the books and theses that attempted to reconcile reason and tradition?

•• The projects of reconciling reason and tradition: I see them as positive and courageous attempts imposed by the circumstances of their time (such as the theses of Ibn Rushd, Ibn Sina, and in modern times Muhammad Abduh). Although they succeeded in defending reason, they sometimes fell into artificiality by trying to prove that philosophy completely aligns with religious texts, while each has its own tools and distinct functions.

• Who are the prominent Arab thinkers who established a philosophical methodology that benefited the West?

•• Among the prominent Arab thinkers who left an impact on the West: Ibn Rushd (Averroes) stands at the forefront; his explanatory and rational methodology of Aristotle, and his distinction between philosophical and religious truth in terms of methodology, laid the foundation for what is known as “Latin Averroism,” which was a cornerstone of skepticism and European rationality and the precursors of the Renaissance. Ibn Sina in sciences and metaphysics, and Al-Farabi in political philosophy, cannot be overlooked either.

• Did the West take the spirit of Islam and leave us the body?

•• The West drew inspiration from the experimental method, scientific research, and rationality that flourished in Islamic civilization during its renaissance. The West did not steal the spirit; rather, we are the ones who abandoned it when we closed the door of ijtihad.

• How was the stereotypical image of Muslims formed in the Arab imagination?

•• History plays a pivotal role; the Western imagination is governed by the residues of the Crusades, the conflict with the Ottoman Empire, and Orientalism, which portrayed the “East” as the exotic other but politically sick and dangerous. These images were reproduced in modern times to justify colonialism and hegemonic policies.

• What about the habitual mechanisms of attributing the charge of terrorism to Muslims?

•• This is an ideological and political fabrication. Politicians used it to justify military interventions and control over resources, and some intellectuals (advocates of the “clash of civilizations” thesis) adopted Islam as a “replacement enemy” after the fall of the Soviet Union to consolidate Western identity and serve right-wing objectives.

• What about the susceptibility of Muslims to extremism and ways of containment?

•• Intellectual stagnation, economic and political marginalization, and presenting rigid textual readings that exclude reason have made some youth prey to extremism. Restoration and containment should not be through violence but by reviving critical and philosophical thought. Renewing religious discourse to focus on objectives and humanity, and providing social justice and economic opportunities.

• What is the safe exit for Muslims in today’s world?

•• The exit is what enables the transition from the victim complex to the effectiveness of achievement. A Muslim asserts himself when he contributes to human civilization through sciences, innovation, and adherence to universal ethical values, while being proud of his identity without isolation or gratuitous conflict.

• How do you see the reality and future of Muslims and migrants in the West?

•• Muslims in the West live a tension between positive integration and the rise of the far right (which fuels Islamophobia). The future depends on their ability to establish full citizenship and present Islam as an added value to Western societies, not as a parallel or isolated entity.

• What is the condition for the success of studying and teaching philosophy in the Arab world?

•• The condition is freedom, and teaching philosophy from early stages not as a “history of ideas” but as a “critical thinking skill” that teaches the student how to ask, analyze, and not accept superstition.

• Where lies the danger of jihadist Salafism in the age of digital technology and artificial intelligence?

•• Extremist jihadist Salafi groups are witnessing a structural transformation in the “age of digital technology and artificial intelligence”; their materials are no longer confined to caves or traditional sermons, but have moved to the hyper-cyber space: by employing algorithms and artificial intelligence, these groups exploit deepfake technologies and automatic content generation to disseminate literature and emotionally influence youth at an astonishing speed, benefiting from complete encryption and dark web networks. They also have decentralized recruitment: digital technology has transformed jihadist thought from “hierarchical organizations” to “scattered networks” or “lone wolves” that feed on closed rooms and encrypted applications, making their security and intellectual pursuit more challenging. Despite modern tools, jihadist Salafism carries a deadly self-contradiction: it uses the most advanced achievements of digital rationality to spread the most closed and regressive ideas. In the future, these movements will transform into “hybrid cyber entities,” and they will only be defeated by encouraging critical thinking among new generations and dismantling their propositions through reason and philosophical deconstruction in the very digital space where they spread.
