U.S. President Donald Trump canceled the 50% tariffs imposed on a number of agricultural and forest products imported from Canada, in a move aimed at alleviating the burdens on American companies and farmers who rely on Canadian products in their production processes.
The decision came following requests from Republican Senator Susan Collins, representing the state of Maine, to the White House to address the repercussions of the tariffs on businesses and farmers in her state, especially as many of them depend on equipment and materials imported from Canada for which it is difficult to find local alternatives without incurring high additional costs.
The White House clarified that the exemptions include plywood, some paper products, machinery and cooling equipment, in addition to packaging boxes.
Collins confirmed that the decision will help support producers of blueberries, potatoes, apples, and seaweed in the state of Maine, noting that these producers represent an important part of the state’s economy and contribute to supporting rural and coastal communities.
The cancellation of the tariffs comes at a time when U.S. border states with Canada, including Maine and Michigan, are facing economic repercussions due to trade restrictions, coinciding with the intensifying electoral competition between Republicans and Democrats, as Republican candidates seek to maintain the support of Trump’s electoral base and attract independent voters.
The tariffs were one of the main issues that sparked controversy during the electoral debate that brought Collins together with her Democratic opponent Troy Jackson on October 6th.
