The American embassy in Baghdad announced today, Tuesday, the thwarting of an attack involving two drones targeting the Green Zone, which houses Iraqi government headquarters and diplomatic missions, including the American embassy.
The Green Zone in central Baghdad is considered one of the most fortified areas in the Iraqi capital, as it contains government institutions, diplomatic missions, and international organizations, making any targeting of it a source of security and political concern.
In recent months, the area and the vicinity of the American embassy have witnessed repeated attacks using rockets and drones, which were dealt with by air defense systems, while some previous attacks resulted in damage to diplomatic facilities.
In March, drone and rocket attacks targeted the American embassy in Baghdad, and air defenses managed to intercept several projectiles, while a drone struck the embassy complex, according to media reports based on security sources and witnesses.
The repeated attacks on American sites and diplomatic missions pose a challenge for Iraqi authorities to prevent the use of Iraqi territory to target foreign interests and to ensure that the country does not become a battleground for regional score-settling.
