The President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, called on the European Union countries to urgently adopt the European Parliament’s decision to include the Houthi militias, along with their political and military wings, leaders, and security apparatus, on the list of terrorist organizations.
During a phone call with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, today, Tuesday, he stated that the Yemeni government relies on the Council’s role in rallying member states to transform this important political stance into a binding European action, utilizing all legal, economic, and diplomatic pressure tools to stop the terrorist attacks by the Houthi militias, comply with international legitimacy decisions, and respect the will of the Yemeni people.
Al-Alimi emphasized that this is the right time for the European Union to voice its decisive stance regarding the arrogance of the militias, which have exceeded all methods of terrorist organizations in terrorizing and targeting civilians, airports, and vital facilities, recruiting children, besieging cities, attacking commercial ships, and detaining international and humanitarian workers. This necessitates the application of European standards for combating terrorism after all peaceful options have been exhausted.
He warned that the continued attacks by the Houthi militias inside Yemen and across borders, as well as in international navigation, make the cost of delay extremely high, explaining that European action now can reduce the resources funding these attacks and enhance the protection of civilians, regional security, and European interests.
The President of the Leadership Council affirmed the state’s commitment and its armed forces, in all their military formations and popular resistance, to proceed with the “Yemen Dawn” operation until the terrorist threat is eliminated and the state’s institutions are restored, asserting its authority over all its national territory. He pointed out that classifying the Houthi militias sends a clear message that achieving any gains through terrorism cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
For his part, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, confirmed the European Union’s support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, standing by the Yemeni people in facing current challenges and alleviating their humanitarian suffering.
He noted the European Union’s interest in enhancing humanitarian response and alleviating the suffering of the population, continuing to coordinate with the Yemeni government and relevant partners to identify priority needs and ways to meet them urgently.
