At a highly sensitive time, with the rising likelihood of renewed military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is moving, in coordination with Turkey and Pakistan within the “Makkah Alliance,” to support mediation efforts between them and to create conditions for a political settlement that prevents the escalation of the crisis, ensuring the security and stability of the region, and mitigating the crisis’s repercussions on the global economy. There is no doubt that this move embodies the Kingdom’s approach to crisis management, based on political realism and a sound assessment of current changes, striking a delicate balance between wisdom in pursuing peace and firmness in protecting national interests.
From the standpoint of my belonging to my country, I affirm that Saudi diplomacy and the visit made by Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman with the Chief of the Pakistani Army, General Asim Munir, and the Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin is not a concession, but rather a progressive step towards addressing the disagreements with Iran, provided that it plays its roles and respects the sovereignty of neighboring countries, and addresses the roots of the tension. From this perspective, support for de-escalation by major Islamic countries does not mean overlooking Iranian aggressions against the Kingdom and the Gulf Arab states, nor accepting attempts at hegemony over Arab countries, but rather places Tehran before the responsibility of reviewing its policies, ceasing its threats, and realizing that its security is inseparable from the security of its surroundings. The continuation of an aggressive approach will only lead to undermining trust, deepening Iran’s isolation, and weakening the chances of building regional relations based on good neighborliness, mutual respect, and common interests. The seriousness of the crisis is evident in the Strait of Hormuz, where freedom of navigation represents an international interest that should not be subjected to political calculations or used as a tool for pressure. Disrupting the movement of ships or imposing fees on them threatens global energy supplies and trade, and therefore, restoring navigation to its normal state and ensuring its safe flow is a necessity that cannot be compromised and is fundamental to any serious resolution of the crisis. There is no doubt that de-escalation cannot be completed without guarantees that prevent the recurrence of aggressions, and clear commitments that respect the sovereignty of states and safeguard their security. Understandings that do not address the roots of the crisis remain fragile, and agreements that are not supported by tangible actions do not establish lasting peace. From this standpoint, the Kingdom continues to support political solutions, without separating diplomacy from the necessities of security and deterrence, or allowing its pursuit of peace to be interpreted as weakness. Rather, it is a lifeline extended for peace in the region. Furthermore, the continuation of its current policies will not only harm the interests of the countries in the region but will also reflect on the Iranian people and their future. The path to stable relations begins with respecting sovereignty, stopping aggressions, and abandoning policies of hegemony and unlawful interventions.
It is certain that Saudi Arabia, whose voice has echoed in Tehran, will not relent and will remain supportive of peace, committed to dialogue, and steadfast in protecting its security and interests and those of its sisters. The meeting was an expression of the strength of Saudi diplomacy and its outstretched hand for consultation and dialogue, but it does not compromise on its security, interests, and the rights of its sisters. This is the equation that does not allow for interpretation: peace is the Kingdom’s choice, and protecting its security and sovereignty is a right that cannot be compromised. May Tehran understand the penultimate message!
