Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has apologized to Aston Villa and its fans following his offensive remarks about the club last week.
Aston Villa’s chairman, Egyptian billionaire Nassef Sawiris, issued a statement confirming that his club would take legal action against Jamie Carragher due to his offensive and unacceptable comments about the club and its fans.
The crisis stems from remarks made by Carragher during the show “The Overlap,” where he discussed the possibility of Unai Emery taking over as manager of Manchester United, before escalating the situation by sending a sharp message to Aston Villa fans, urging them to “stop the nonsense and be quiet.”
Apology via “X”
Following the angry statement from Aston Villa, Carragher posted a message in an attempt to calm the situation, writing on his account on the “X” platform: “I would like to apologize to Aston Villa, its owners, and its fans; my comments this week were inappropriate and wrong.”
He added: “I assure Villa fans that my comments were made in jest, but I understand that they were not taken that way, so I apologize, and I wish you all the best.”
Emery is bigger than Aston Villa
Carragher previously hinted that Spanish coach Unai Emery has become bigger than Aston Villa and that his ambitions may exceed the club.
Aston Villa won the UEFA Europa League title last season and finished fifth in the league, but they were forced to sell several of their top players, such as Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, and Emiliano Martinez.
Carragher said: “I think Unai Emery is an exceptional manager, considering what he delivers year after year, but the reason I respond to Aston Villa fans is that I can’t believe a manager who has achieved so much success in the Europa League, if he wins the tournament three or four times, wouldn’t aspire to compete in the Champions League.”
He continued: “Aston Villa will never become Manchester United, but he will certainly want the opportunity to manage a giant club again; there is a hierarchy in football, whether you like it or not.”
“Will never become Manchester United”
He concluded his remarks by saying: “There are clubs bigger than Aston Villa, and they will get their players or their manager, so Aston Villa fans need to stop the nonsense and be quiet; Aston Villa will never become Manchester United.”
