The “Masam” project for mine clearance in Yemen has achieved a qualitative milestone, with a total of 600,000 mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices cleared by its field teams since the project’s launch at the end of June 2018 until October 30, 2026.
Reaching this number marks a turning point in the project’s journey, which has continued its field operations in various Yemeni areas for more than eight years, challenging extremely complex conditions, the widespread contamination by mines, the diversity of explosives, and difficult terrains, in addition to the lack of maps and accurate information regarding their planting locations.
The project’s Director General, Osama Al-Qusaibi, expressed his pride in the project reaching the milestone of 600,000 cleared mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices, affirming that this achievement represents an exceptional milestone in the project’s journey and reflects the magnitude of the efforts exerted by its engineering teams over more than eight years in confronting the threat of mines in Yemen.
He noted that behind this number are years of hard fieldwork and the efforts and sacrifices made by the project’s personnel to protect civilians and secure land contaminated with explosives, emphasizing that the true value of this achievement lies in the lives saved, the dangers removed, and the areas that have regained a degree of safety.
Al-Qusaibi confirmed that the project is continuing its humanitarian mission, and reaching this number represents an important milestone in its journey and a motivation to continue working until the Yemeni lands are cleared of mines and war remnants.
The significance of this achievement is not limited to its numerical representation; it extends to what it means in reality. Clearing 600,000 explosive materials means removing hundreds of thousands of sources of danger that could have turned into deadly incidents, claiming civilian lives or causing injuries and permanent disabilities, in addition to depriving residents of benefiting from their lands, homes, roads, and vital facilities.
Since the start of its operations, “Masam” has not only dealt with explosive devices but has also contributed to creating conditions for the return of life to affected areas by clearing agricultural lands and securing roads, residential areas, and facilities, helping residents to regain their daily activities and supporting recovery and stability efforts.
This achievement stands behind engineering teams working in extremely dangerous field conditions, dealing with threats that leave no room for error, and making significant sacrifices, including the loss of several team members’ lives while performing their humanitarian duty. These sacrifices reveal the other side of this achievement and highlight the human cost borne by the workers in the project to accomplish their mission.
