كشف مؤلف رواية (سقوط الحوت) الكاتب الأمريكي دانيال كراوس، أن فكرة العمل جاءت من حادثة بحرية نادرة وشغلت الرأي العام، بعدما اطّلع على قصة رجل قال إنه أمضى وقتاً داخل حوت قبل أن ينجو، لتتحول الواقعة إلى الشرارة الأولى لرواية حققت انتشاراً واسعاً ثم انتقلت إلى الشاشة الكبيرة.
وتدور أحداث (سقوط الحوت) حول غواص شاب يجد نفسه عالقاً داخل حوت (عنبر) أثناء رحلة بحرية، ليخوض سباقاً مع الزمن للبقاء على قيد الحياة قبل نفاد الأكسجين. وقد صدرت الرواية عام 2023 قبل أن تتحول لاحقاً إلى فيلم سينمائي.
وجاءت الإشارة إلى الحادثة الواقعية مجدداً بعد تداول قصة الشاب الفنزويلي أدريان سيمانكاس، الذي ظهر في مقطع مصور خلال عام 2025 بينما كان يمارس التجديف قبالة سواحل تشيلي، حيث بدا وكأن حوتاً أحدب ابتلعه لثوانٍ قبل أن يلفظه سالماً. وأثارت الواقعة اهتماماً عالمياً واسعاً، خاصة أن خبراء الأحياء البحرية أكدوا أن مثل هذه الحيتان لا تستطيع عادة ابتلاع إنسان بصورة كاملة بسبب طبيعة أجهزتها التشريحية، مرجحين أن ما حدث كان أثناء عملية تغذية للحوت.
ورغم الطابع الدرامي للقصة، يؤكد مختصون أن «الحبكة الروائية في (سقوط الحوت) تبقى عملاً خيالياً، بينما استُلهمت الفكرة الأساسية من قصص وحوادث بحرية نادرة أثارت تساؤلات حول إمكانية بقاء إنسان داخل حوت ومدى واقعية مثل هذا السيناريو».
The author of the novel (The Fall of the Whale) American writer Daniel Kraus revealed that the idea for the work came from a rare maritime incident that captured public attention, after he learned about the story of a man who claimed he spent time inside a whale before escaping, turning the incident into the initial spark for a novel that achieved widespread popularity and later transitioned to the big screen.
The events of (The Fall of the Whale) revolve around a young diver who finds himself trapped inside a (sperm) whale during a sea voyage, racing against time to survive before running out of oxygen. The novel was published in 2023 before it was later adapted into a film.
The reference to the real incident resurfaced following the story of Venezuelan young man Adrian Simancas, who appeared in a video in 2025 while kayaking off the coast of Chile, where it seemed as if a humpback whale swallowed him for a few seconds before spitting him out unharmed. The incident garnered widespread global attention, especially since marine biology experts confirmed that such whales typically cannot swallow a human whole due to the nature of their anatomical structure, suggesting that what happened was during the whale’s feeding process.
Despite the dramatic nature of the story, specialists affirm that “the narrative structure in (The Fall of the Whale) remains a work of fiction, while the basic idea was inspired by rare maritime stories and incidents that raised questions about the possibility of a human surviving inside a whale and the realism of such a scenario.”
