French deputies rejected the state budget draft for 2027 in its first reading, prolonging the political deadlock amid concerns about the country’s public finances, just a few months before the presidential elections.
Tense Climate
With 458 deputies voting against the draft and zero in favor, “with two deputies abstaining from voting,” all political blocs, including those supporting the government, rejected the “revenue” section of the budget draft, in a tense social and economic climate.
At the end of nearly ten days of discussions, opposition deputies expressed their rejection of the government’s options, while government allies expressed regret that the text had been completely stripped of its essence, according to news agencies and what was published by the “Al-Arabiya.net” website.
Series of Difficulties
This development marks a new chapter in the series of difficulties facing the approval of the budget within a National Assembly that lacks a clear majority, following French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve Parliament in 2024. As a result, the budget draft in its original text will be referred to the Senate, where it will be discussed starting from November 20.
In an attempt to ease tensions, the Prime Minister’s office indicated that “the time for settlement will come later,” postponing the possibility of reaching an agreement that combines the government’s vision and that of the Senate to next December, or to the stage when the text returns again to the National Assembly for a new reading.
