The announcement by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo regarding his retirement from international play has sparked widespread reactions within sports circles, while his partner Georgina Rodriguez drew attention with an emotional response following the decision that marked the end of an exceptional career spanning over 23 years with the Portugal national team.
On Thursday, the captain of Al Nassr announced his intention to end his journey with the Portuguese national team after the international break in November, confirming through a video message posted on his official accounts that the time has come to hand over the (number 7 jersey) to the next generation, after many years of achievements and record-breaking performances.
Georgina Rodriguez quickly reacted to the announcement, as she reposted the video clip on her (Instagram) account, accompanied by red hearts and crying eye emojis, indicating her emotional response to the end of one of the most prominent careers in international football history. Georgina’s stance is a continuation of her ongoing support for Ronaldo in recent times, especially following his recent crisis with the Portugal national team, where she had previously publicly supported him after he left the national team’s camp due to a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.
In his farewell message, Ronaldo said: “It is time to return our national team’s (number 7) jersey to its rightful place,” expressing his gratitude for the exceptional moments he experienced while wearing the Portugal jersey, which included goals, titles, and memories that will remain etched in his career.
The 41-year-old star concluded his international journey after playing 234 matches for Portugal, during which he scored 146 goals, making him the most capped player and the highest goal scorer at the men’s international level.
Ronaldo’s journey with the national team began in 2003, before leading Portugal to win the UEFA Euro 2016, in addition to winning the UEFA Nations League title twice, along with his prominent presence in World Cup tournaments and continental competitions.
The retirement decision came after weeks of tension between Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus, following a dispute regarding his role within the national team, which escalated to him leaving the Portugal camp before one of the matches. After that, the player apologized to the fans and his teammates, while the Portuguese Football Federation punished him with a 30-day suspension and a financial fine.
By announcing his departure from the international stage, Ronaldo closes one of the brightest chapters in the history of Portuguese football, leaving behind an exceptional legacy that is difficult to replicate and records that will stand as a testament to the career of one of the greatest players of the game.
