In a resounding move that shook the political and oil circles in Iraq, the Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued a harsh sentence of 8 years in prison against Hussein Taleb Aboud, the former director general of the Oil Products Distribution Company, obliging him to return more than 36 million dollars of embezzled public funds.
The details of the complicated case date back to the involvement of the prominent official in exploiting his job influence to direct 40 contracts and 29 purchase orders worth over 119 million dollars in favor of specific companies at the North Refineries Company, earning himself illegal commissions amounting to 19.7 million dollars, in addition to providing financial benefits to other partners worth 23 million dollars.
The dramatic downfall of the Iraqi official (who is a leader in the National Wisdom Movement) came at a critical time, as security forces arrested him in Baghdad just hours before he was to take the constitutional oath to fill a vacant seat in parliament, transforming him from a presumed parliament member to someone subject to prison sentences and financial restitution. This conviction is part of an extensive and intensive campaign launched by the Federal Integrity Commission against corruption networks and commissions in the energy sector.
