From the “Bride of the Resorts,” and the garden of Mecca, that city which raises its head above the Sarawat Mountains to adorn itself with dew, and exudes the most fragrant scents, emerged the writer wrapped in cold fog, who is accustomed to embracing the clouds, and flowed onto paper, making the words green. From the eastern gate of Mecca, Nayef Mahdi appeared to us with trembling imprints at first, then the “Red Detention”; to top the highest peak of Jabal Ghazwan alongside the writers and poets of this dear city.

“The Red Detention”: Masks of Identity… and the Tumult of Nothingness

When we talk about narrative storytelling, we evoke Anton Chekhov as a global example of human and psychological literature, and I see that the Saudi writer Nayef Mahdi is the Arab face of Chekhov.

The attentive reader of the title of the short story collection finds himself before an artistic tableau filled with isolation, coercion, and the absence of freedom, embodied in the internal siege of the human soul, amidst blood, sacrifice, and destruction, with the harshness of pain represented in the color red, which is a symbol of revolution and rejection.

At first glance, the reader may suspect that they are facing a purely bleak work, but as they delve deeper, they find before them a symbolic visual key that prepares the self to enter a narrative world charged with open psychological questions about reality.

Nayef Mahdi relied on a questioning approach in his narrative structure, using titles that weave confusion among the masks of human identity and the tumult of nothingness in all its forms, presenting a philosophical, psychological, and human discourse. In my view of life, death is the birth of a new life; we find the writer opening his collection with death, relying on his description and the manner of the soul’s exit from the material clay using one of the narrative techniques, namely the invocation of the past time, which we find frequently in his collection, with varying methods of invocation.

The trajectory of the short story collection explores three main lines, which are clear and evident:

– Is willpower capable of uprooting isolation from its existence? By dissecting human emotions in the depths of this “detention” world and how time and space can transform into potential enemies? And how does man invent methods to survive and overcome the walls of this pit?

– Is memory a tool for survival? As we see it in the narrative, it forms a retrieval of the past, evoking what a person loves from small details as a weapon of resistance against the captivity of place and the collapse of the self.

– The social and political projection; the collection does not isolate the individual from the reality of the living society, but rather the individual is a mirror reflecting crises, and the intertwining of individual oppression with collective oppression in our reality.

These lines manifested through free association and internal monologue that emerged in some texts in favor of inner narration, and the writer deserves commendation for this, as the layers of the soul opened through the ramifications of thoughts and visions. Moreover, the density and symbolism in this collection are a registered mark in favor of the writer, as he replaced direct details with symbolic signs and shifts that granted the text multiple dimensions, leaving him with a future interpretive space. The creative balance between solid realism and poetic language provided this dimension, which reduced the intensity of the bleak reality and granted it an aesthetic dimension to complete Nayef Mahdi’s tableau.

• Do the walls of the pit in which man is imprisoned confine the mortal body? Or do they imprison his spiritual memory in its shackles? So that the soul wanders in the spaces beyond the event?

• Is a person judged by what appears from him, or by what resides in the depths of his being, with endless and boundless conflicts and resistances?

• Is he judged by the past to reside in it? Or is he capable of leaving it? Or does it inhabit us and never leave us?

All these questions and others are manifested in the texts, but they remain open with no answers; the reader has the right to participate in building the narrative of the story through arriving at answers based on personal vision.

In conclusion:

I extend my greetings to Nayef Mahdi for not being a mere therapist or theorist, but rather a proposer of human and psychological issues, even if the narrative storytelling contained answers without declaration or display.
