Indicators of a return to military confrontation between the United States and Iran are increasing, as President Donald Trump’s administration reviews plans to resume combat operations, coinciding with the Central Command’s completion of preparations for the possibility of carrying out large-scale strikes, while Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has directed the military to respond quickly to any aggression targeting the country.
Final Touches for the Return of Fighting
Axios reported that U.S. officials said Trump held a meeting yesterday (Thursday) with senior national security advisers to discuss developments regarding the Iranian file, while the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) is finalizing its military preparations in anticipation of resuming combat operations. An American official stated that the military has not yet received new directives from Washington regarding Iran, despite the ongoing review of the available military options. In statements reflecting Washington’s commitment to preventing Tehran from acquiring military nuclear capabilities, Trump affirmed that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons, indicating that his country has control over the files it wants inside Iran since its presence there began seven months ago. Trump stated that his administration faces two options: either take additional steps or endorse the agreement, adding that Iran will not be able to take any steps regarding its nuclear program without Washington’s approval. He hinted at a new military escalation, saying, “I prefer not to destroy what remains of Iran, but I may have to do so,” confirming that his country’s decision regarding Tehran will be announced soon.
Quick Response and Iranian Conditions
In contrast, the spokesperson for the Iranian army announced that Khamenei emphasized during a meeting with several military leaders the necessity of a quick response to any aggression targeting Iran, warning that any new hostile actions would not lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesperson linked the reopening of the strait to the fulfillment of seven conditions set by Tehran for the United States, reflecting the ongoing disagreement over arrangements to end the war and the future of navigation in one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
Reuters reported that a senior Iranian official stated that Tehran sent a nuclear proposal to Washington via Qatar, and that the United States is currently reviewing it, but he stressed that discussions will not begin until the seven Iranian demands are met, which include lifting sanctions, releasing frozen assets, and obtaining compensation for the war.
Netanyahu Presses for Escalation
The Associated Press revealed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump, during a phone call over the weekend, to launch new strikes against Iran, without the U.S. president committing to military action. Estimates from officials in the Middle East suggest that the period following the U.S. midterm elections may witness a shift in Washington’s calculations regarding escalation, amid fears that the election results could give Trump more room to act militarily.
While officials believe that the election results could open a window for mediators to intensify their diplomatic efforts, avoiding the collapse of the negotiating track and a return to war, both sides remain committed to conflicting conditions regarding the nuclear file and the Strait of Hormuz.
