It seems that the International Football Federation is approaching an unprecedented turning point, after the French newspaper “L’Équipe” revealed that Frenchman Arsène Wenger is close to making a decisive decision that could change the dynamics of the FIFA presidential elections.
Wenger, who is 77 years old and currently serves as the Director of Global Football Development within the organization, has not yet made up his mind, but according to the newspaper, he is closer than ever to entering the race, after a long period of hesitation that lasted for months.
A series of intensive meetings have been ongoing for days with influential figures inside and outside FIFA, aimed at convincing the legendary former Arsenal manager to enter a direct confrontation with the current president, Gianni Infantino.
Wenger has only stated that he is still “in a waiting phase,” but he emphasized that this phase “will not last long,” in a clear indication that announcing his final position is a matter of days, possibly by the middle of next week.
Why Wenger?
The camp opposing Infantino believes that Wenger possesses all the qualities of the ideal candidate: global fame, extensive experience, great popularity in Africa and Asia, and complete independence from UEFA.
Additionally, his public distancing from “Infantino” during the crisis over the privatization of the World Cup has given him the image of a “clean man” within the organization, earning him the support of several FIFA employees who wish to end the current president’s era. If Wenger wins, he will not be able to serve more than one term, lasting only four years, due to his age.
A race heating up in Rabat
The elections scheduled for March 18, 2027, in the Moroccan capital Rabat, currently see Infantino running for a new term despite rising criticisms, alongside Japanese Kozo Tashima, the honorary president of the Japanese Football Association, and Swiss Ramon Vega.
If Wenger enters the fray, it will turn the elections from a nearly settled race into an open contest with all possibilities.
